Mythbusters on sound suppressors

It was a decent show. They wanted to test the myth of whether or not suppressed handguns sounded like they do in the movie. They called the myth ‘plausible’, which I don’t agree with. After all, you have movies like Assassins where someone with a suppressed pistol is shooting at someone in a crowd of people and no one notices. And they only tested a 45 and a 9mm.

A couple of good bits were when Adam said (paraphrased) that police and military like them because they reduce muzzle climb and recoil; reduce the concussive force; eliminate flash; and make it easier to stay on target. He concluded with something like which make guns safer and easier to operate. He also specifically said these were not assassination tools.

Also, citizens love them too. They’re great for teaching new shooters and kids:

And they had a sound guy measure the db levels of suppressed and unsuppressed, and he noted the difference took them from dangerous to safe. Excellent.

Sound suppressors are the neighborly thing to do.

If I find the video online, I’ll post it later.

Now if Adam wasn’t sweeping everyone with his weapon….”Ooops! I just shot my Cameraman in the knees! Yuk, Yuk, Yuk….”

My opinion on the sound effects used for suppressors in the movie was “100% Busted” before the show started and they didn’t do anything to change that opinion. I’ve seen a lot of suppressors in movies and I’ve shot/witnessed literally hundreds of gun/suppressor combinations and almost every attempt at a movie fx has been cringeworthy…most are closer to sounding like a blaster from Star Wars than the dull “puff” with a sharper “slap, slap” most suppressors produce from the exhaust gases and action cycling.

The recent anime “Cat Shit One” did well with the KAC USP-T pistol suppressor (identifiable by the “dimples” on the can) and the rather generic rifle suppressor used by the “sniper” in the episode I’ve watched…but it is part of a tiny minority.

This saddens me. I have my first suppressor being “Stamped” right now by Batfman. I was hoping it would sound like a mouse pissing on cotton.

That’s not true, I know what they sound like…but I like the phrase “mouse pissing on cotton”.

HL, wish I could afford one, the tax stamp I can do but the can’s I’m looking at are about a grand. Would be nice for keeping squirrels out of the wifeys bird feeder…..

  7. Diomed Says:

A grand? I don’t think you need a high-end .223 or .308 can to bust squirrels. A .22 will do it quite well, and for under five hundred.

    Geeze, sorry ’bout that.

  12. Robert Park Says:

Question: Why is there water coming out when they shoot with the suppressor? If you look at their slow motion video, there is water drops shooting out. What’s up with that?

  13. SayUncle Says:

Some suppressors are filled with liquid to aid suppression.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
