Ry posted another Darwin Award a couple weeks ago. That matches right along with this.

I knew a guy that caught his young son with a pistol round in his mouth, trying to light it like a cigarette. The guy didn’t even have a firearm, or know there was ammunition around; it was just in a junk box. Fortunately, it would probably get too uncomfortable to continue before it cooked off, but somehow I’m not really interested in finding out.

My son shoots. He loads his own rifle (unless he’s borrowing my AR15). He keeps it pointed in a safe direction. He does all of this under proper supervision.

The 30-06 cartridge that was ignited with a lighter illustrates something I saw on Mythbusters: when a loose cartridge explodes, it is the lightweight case that moves off at high velocity, while the bullet with its larger mass and hence lower velocity is less of a threat to bystanders.

So never do like Sean Connery in “The Man Who Would Be King” and put cartridges in your camp fire, unless like him, you really need to do so.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
