My Shocked Face

The Toyota sudden acceleration thing from a bit back? Not real.

And why did the .gov waste all their time money and Nasa on this one? It should be left to Toyota to figure out or go out of business

  2. ViolentIndifference Says:

I have to stop using it as an excuse for speeding.

Crazy, I know, but despite the lack of new floormat or an accelerator pedal modification, I have yet to pilot my Tundra into a building, or at a zillion miles per hour through traffice (accidentally).

Isn’t NASA supposed to be doing Muslim-outreach and Global-Warming fake-science? When it happened with the similar Audi 5000 fiasco, was Audi also in competition with the UAW over Government money?

NASA and the .gov are (supposedly) a neutral third party. If it was left to Toyota, and they said they couldn’t find anything, who would believe them?

Also, for related amusement value go here.

Yet it’s still an “accelerate by wire” system without a kill switch on the brake pedal (unlike some other makes, like VW).

I won’t believe there isn’t a bug somewhere until they open the source code and schematics for peer review.

Meanwhile, Toyota gets to spend pennies for doormats and petal hardware retrofits instead of dollars for a “drive by wire” hardware upgrades and sawbucks for legal claims.

I’ll tell you what though. The next generation will have the hardware kill-switch on the brake petal.

I drove a rental Toyo and figured the problem out sitting in the parking lot while checking for where all the switches were. Brake and gas are virtually on the same level and pretty close together. When I started to press the brake to shift into gear I hit the gas at the same time. Other problem is they seem to have a delay when you let off the throttle, engine doesn’t slow down right away, or car free-wheels but it doesn’t feel like it’s slowing down at all. So, you go for the brake pedal and hit that close-by gas pedal by mistake. Then panic sets in and bang, they hit something. Folks expect cars to do too much these days. traction control, anti-lock brakes, gps, etc. Ya need to learn to drive on a ’72 Delta 88 with worn ball joints, loose steering, bad shocks, poorly adjusted drum brakes and a 455 Olds engine that runs perfectly. If you can get that from point A to point B in one piece, then you can have something better. And take the darn thing to an empty parking lot and do some donuts on the snow and ice so you don’t go spinning down the interstate in front of me when three flakes fall from the sky.

yeah, me too. Although I did get the pedal fix on a recall when I went in for my 50,000 mile checkup on the 2007 Tundra. Don’t notice anything different in the 15,000 miles since.

Motor Trend pretty much proved that the brakes on a late model Toyota with the “drive by wire” system would still come to a complete stop from 60mph and full throttle. Even if there was a defect causing the throttle to stick open, the only way it resulted in people having crashes at high speed was in combination with user error or an otherwise mechanically unsound car.
