Family is a social thing.
Marriage is a contract.
Currently that contract is between you, your spouse, and the government.
Get the government out of the marriage business.

Only if you’re a man. It works out just fine for women. A friend of mine just finished his divorce. She has drug issues, and can’t stop getting arrested, yet he cannot get custody of their daughter.
