They’re the 21st Century Smith & Wesson Military & Police police revolver; the ubiquitous standard of American law enforcement. Cheap, rugged, reliable, simple… what’s not to like?
Too bad the originator of the American M&P decided to basically hand the Austrians a two-decade head start before countering with anything better than the weaksauce “Me Too!” Sigma.

I hate to admit it, but I totally agree. This past saturday I went to a one day gun class, and the morning of I went to get into my gun room and someone had changed the locks (loooooong story) so I didn’t have any of my stuff I had laid out on my bench. Well I had bought a glock 19 the day before and 500 rnds of ammo at the same time and it was still out in my truck so I decided to see if glocks were all that the interwebs say they are…..that gun was as right out of the box as you can get, and not one damn hiccup….and I shot better that day then I have shot ever. Ive become a fanboy.

Also they’re at a very accessible price point.
I hear Wilson Combat makes a kickass pistol, but I don’t know many people who are willing to dump that kind of scratch on a single pistol.

While I agree with others points – for many they are the quintessential police sidearm. That makes them particularly attractive to those with good intentions; and bad.

Glock are just great pistols. Easy, reliable, inexpensive; they are to the gun world what the Model T was to early cars, and they shoot even better when they have been used. I see used Glocks going for $350, seriously, where can you find a kick ass workhorse pistol used for that amount of money?

They run. They stand up to abuse. They require virtually no maintenance. They have a reasonably short trigger with a positive reset. They are accurate enough. They are affordable. If you are so inclined, you can completely disassemble one in less than a minute and-a-half (except for the sights, but they are easy enough with a sight pusher). And… you can rely upon one when your life is on the line.

Reasonably priced is a matter of opinion… I think they are very much overpriced. I do like them and own one, just would not buy a new one because of the price of them and the mags.
And I do know that 11% of that is the fed’s fault.

I’ve never fired a Glock so I’m neutral about them. I’ve heard many folks talking about them and their comments range from “great” to “garbage”. I guess the Glock’s like the 1911 in that regard, folks either love ’em or hate ’em with no in between.
I’ll try one out one of these days but it’s gonna take something really awesome to wean me from my S&W model 10 🙂

My local shop had some ex-cop Glocks and I was tempted; might yet acquire one. Otherwise, I’m not sold, but mostly cos they’re so boxy. I guess I’m thinking too much of inserting it into the holster, whereas extracting it is more pertinent to most situations. I’m getting more amenable, I guess.

Another good aspect of the Glocks: they are taking the price pressure off of Springfield XDs.
Which Mama lurrves, having traded a Glock for one.
Her Glock 23 was my idea, she tried the XD and decided right away to move over to it.
I was in a classroom full of cops this week, and 9 of 11 were wearing Glocks. That’s the answer to the ‘bogeyman’ argument.

In my State, it was required years ago for any new handgun to be taken to the PD for a “safety inspection” (see registration tactic). Every cop I had handed my new pistols to couldn’t safely operate them. One commented that my new XD40 was “unsafe” just because the dolt didn’t know what a grip safety was or what effect it has on being able to work the slide. I had to explain to him that it was just like the grip safety on a 1911. His response was “Wha?” Glocks are fine if you like them. Yes I have shot a few, they work. But I don’t buy things because cops do. Otherwise I would have gone into diabetic coma years ago from eating too any donuts. And for the record, I am an LEO! : )

A marine buddy of mine calls them “$400 guns that shoot like $800 ones.” I can’t say I’ve had a wide-ranging expeience with firearms, but the bullet goes where I point the gun, the gun itslef was affordable, and the only malf I have ever had was operator error (riding the slide back).

M4Finny: you misunderstand. whether the cops are competent with their pistols is not part of the argument. That PDs issue Glocks in huge quantities, makes it hard for antis to say that “there’s no legitimate use for a Glock”, at least in comparison to the vilified Kalashnikov.
Oh well.
