Do you carry while shooting?

I usually do. And here’s why. Seems a shooter was robbed of his AR-15 while at the shooting range.

  1. Stranger Says:

Back in the days when it was illegal to carry a gun anywhere but “the dashboard of a wagon or other conveyance” I asked Lacy Murphy if he was carrying.

“I got my pants on, don’t I,” was his response. Mine as well. Range, bank, church, where ever.

  2. Jay G. Says:

Always. ALWAYS carry to, from, and at the range. I normally bring anywhere from $1,500 – $3,000 worth of hardware (and generally ~ $250 worth of ammo too) with me. If I were walking around with 3 large in my pocket I’d be carrying; why not protect my other investments?

Side note: It seems like stealing a gun at the range would be a particularly good way to get one’s self shot…

  3. Skullz Says:

Always carry your gun… (within the confines of the law, of course)

Truth is, you can never tell when someone is going to snap – at a gun range, gun show, gun shop, grocery store, library, etc…

Although from what can be understood from the thin detail in the story, carrying a gun would not have changed the outcome. If the shitbag was waiting with his gun ready when the victim walked back from the target stand, victim would not have been able to draw and fire before the shitbag did.

  4. mike w. Says:

We can’t carry at the range. Silly, but those are the range rules, and there’s not exactly a bunch of places to shoot around here.

  6. JP Says:

I always keep something available and ready to use. Whether its carrying normally or keeping an extra loaded mag on me for the particular weapon I’m handling at that moment.

  7. ericire12 Says:

    In a word: Yes!

I carry to and from as well as draw from concealment to give my carry gun a work out atleast once while I’m there.

+1 to the mouse guns comment 😉

  8. Canthros Says:

I do, but only until I’ve dumped the first magazine downrange.

OTOH, I frequent busy ranges. It would be hard to stick somebody up when there’s people waiting for spots to open up on the firing line. I’m usually more concerned about having my stuff wander off while I’m setting up targets.

  9. Rustmiester Says:

My Kel Tec is always in my pocket at the range.

  10. A Horse Thief Says:

Most of the ranges around here ask shooters to unholster their carry rigs prior to shooting. I still don’t understand why, as it motivates me to go to national forest land to shoot on more often than not.

  11. Bubblehead Les Says:

Damn! At the range? Blast! I usually break out my CCW gun when I get to the range and get in some practice with it. Now it looks like I have to have a 2nd. CCW gun and rotate its practice time. Darn! Guess I have to print this article out and show the wife why I need to buy another gun, huh? Golly! Have to go to several gun shops, see what’s in stock, gosh darn it, look at all the gun shopping I have to do!

  12. Mu Says:

My (membership required) range is rather strict on the “no carry” rule, to include the LOEs using the range. On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about a random stranger next to you either.

  13. JD Says:

I always have my PX4 on me somewhere when I’m at the range, usually it’s concealed.

  14. RML Says:

Always. I shoot on BLM land outside of town. Most people there are responsible, but occasionally you’ll see the young gansta shitheads who shows up to empty one 30 round magazine from an AR from just outside of his car, sometimes with mom or grandma at the wheel. I wear the Glock 19 with a full magazine of personal defense ammo, or the GP-100 full of .357 hollow points if I’m shooting the Glock. I’ve had dudes pull up in crappy little cars to give the hard stare before moving on. The main thing is to go about 6 or 7 am while most bad guys are still asleep or in jail.

  15. Geodkyt Says:

    Old Army indoctrination.

I do NOT transport weapons (especially with ammo) without having a loaded gun at hand.

That’s why I like to carry a revolver when going shoot handguns — I reload it when done and don’t have to worry about setback when unloading and reloading it at home after cleaning. If I’m carrying a semiauto as my sidearm and no revolver, I just use the round in the chamber as the first round of practice for the same reason.

  16. Matthew Carberry Says:

    Three words:

    Platt and Matix

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_FBI_Miami_shootout

Especially when not at formal ranges or when shooting alone it is foolishness to be out in public with a valuable object desirable to criminals without the means of defending it and you.

On a lighter note, Scott Glenn would have been better off in Silvarado if he hadn’t shot all his guns dry while practicing.

  17. Will Says:

Bingo! Platt and Matix. They make a very persuasive argument for ccw when shooting at remote ranges. Killing target shooters (after they shot all their ammo, IIRC) was how they acquired their weapons.
Had a friend point out how stupid it was to shoot all the ammo, and not have anything for the trip home, about 10 yrs before that Miami shootout.

  18. maddmedic Says:

I carry my weapon all the time.
Except at my office which is a gun free zone.
Been known to have it there also and other places some ignoramus hoplophobes think I shoudn’t.

    Bleh..

    I do not trust anyone.
But then I am getting older and grumpier and everyone is starting to piss me off.

  19. Burke Says:

    Remote ranges, yes.

Nearby public rifle range, no. (It is also the sheriff’s training facility and since the rules say no, I listen.)

I do ALWAYS carry to and from the facility and NEVER drive strait home. I also use discreet gun bags.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
