Springfield XD: Go away

Look, I know the HS2000 err Springfield XD is a fine pistol and all that. But I’m sick of seeing it. Every gun magazine has no less than 2,724 ads for it. There’s a big XD. A little XD. An extended XD. One in 40 that’s big. One in 45 that’s bigger.

There’s even one with an M. I don’t know what it is but it shows up every where.

In the last year, they’ve come out with an XD in every size, most popular calibers, different heights, colors, weights, magazines and whatever else.

And every time they shave a fraction of an inch off of one and add a consonant to the end of it, it’s time for a new ad blitz. Everywhere I look, there’s an XD. Enough.

    As overexposed as the Glock?

  2. SayUncle Says:

i don’t recall the last time i saw a glock ad in a magazine.

  3. mike w. Says:

Heh, and if I’m not mistaken there’s an XD on the Front Sight ad right here on your page.

  4. SayUncle Says:

    oh god, it’s stalking me!

  5. Robert Says:

Flipped through Combat Handguns magazine yesterday at the bookstore. Glock ad on page 2 or 4, can’t remember exactly. Tag line was something about how more law enforcement units use Glock than any other brand.

  6. bob dole Says:

Old mcdonald had a farm! E-i-e-i-o!

  7. Drake Says:

Uncle, I just think that the XDs are the trendy pistol, just like Glock was about ten years ago. You couldn’t swing a dead cat without seeing one.

  8. Shootin' Buddy Says:

    Uncle,

Which XD should I buy in order to celebrate McDonald?

    For Heller I bought the two-toned 5″?

I am most concerned about dem dare bares, Mesikans, and Dimmokrats. Which XD is right for me?

  9. TomcatsHanger Says:

well, how else are they gonna sell a $300 handgun for $500? 🙂

There is a free gun mag i pick up from a sporting goods chain store in town that is between 20 and 30 pages long. There are always at least two ads for XD’s in it, sometimes both full page ads, and once the damn thing WAS an XD advertisement.

  10. SPQR Says:

Springfield does seem to be trying to hold up the entire industry’s advertising business by itself.

  11. Chirol Says:

ANd worst of all, XD sucks. Just another sad Glock rip off.

  12. SayUncle Says:

i don’t think they suck. i’m just annoyed i can’t swing a dead cat without hitting an ad for one.

  13. ericire12 Says:

The Front Site ad has one because they are giving away an XD.

    Shootin’ Buddy:

You didn’t ask me, but I’d recommend at least waiting for the Smith and Wesson McDonald commemorative before making a decision.

That is, if S&W is compatible with the way you roll.

(You think I’m joking, but S&W did do a Heller commemorative. I didn’t pick one up because I thought it was kind of ugly. They did a 2nd amendment commemorative back in the mid-80s that was much nicer.)

  15. Dan Says:

XDs rule. Although, I do feel the same way with the 1 trillion m-16whatever varients that seem to be made every year.

  16. Texas Jack Says:

Read an article that said it was a good gun so I bought an XD9 “Tactical” (5″ barrel). Took my CHL range test with it, then decided I wanted something smaller to carry. Bought a “Sub-compact” (3″ barrel) and carry it (in my pocket) everywhere.
A normal trip to the range is about 150 -200 rounds through the two of them, so I’d say about 2,000 to 2,500 rounds total (both pistols). Failures to feed – zero. Misfires – zero. Malfunctions of any kind – zero. I will add that range day always ends with cleaning time; every gun that was fired gets a proper cleaning before I do.

  17. Standard Mischief Says:

    >I didn’t pick one up because I thought it was kind of ugly

I didn’t pick one up because S&W didn’t give me a good 360 degree look at the thing. They probably didn’t do that because there’s that fscking lock on the other side.

  18. Kim du Toit Says:

The XD is a nice gun, IF you like DA pistols (I don’t). As for their overexposure… [shrug]

Funny: a little while ago, I felt the same way about Ruger ads. They seemed to be inside the front cover of every damn magazine except Cosmo. Not that I ever read Cosmo, of course.

  19. Rabbit Says:

I think they’re overexposed on ad coverage, but I’ve never thought that increasing the numbers of first-time or repeat gun owners and the numbers of guns in the marketplace is a bad thing.

Maybe it’s an indication of other manufacturers NOT spending enough in the advertising arena if you think there is a preponderence of one maker.

  20. Paul Says:

Had an XD once. Could not hit the broad side of a barn with it. that and all the stuff hanging off of it you could not draw it.

Now you might get me to buy a beretta 92, that looks to be made the correct way.

  21. RML Says:

Shootin Buddy – What to use on white conservatives/Republicans and tea baggers? I think something of foreign manufacture, preferably in a metric caliber, would be appropriate, don’t you?

  22. Weer'd Beard Says:

They’re also so ugly they’d make a freight train take a dirt road!

I guess they’re good guns, but we can’t buy them here, and they’re ugly!

Still I like seeing ads for them betters than seeing ads for the “Taurus-of-the-month”, I like even less seeing gun mags review them and struggling not to say “THIS GUN IS MADE OF SUCK AND FAIL!!!!”

  23. Tam Says:

The XD is a nice gun, IF you like DA pistols (I don’t).

Since the striker is fully cocked by the movement of the slide, I’m not sure how it qualifies as “Double Action”.

  24. JWilliams Says:

I use to work for a magazine back in the day. And when you run low on advertisers, you throw extra ads at your current advertisers for cheap… could be that the industry is just not advertising that much, and with graphic designers being a dime a dozen, cranking out new ads is not a big deal…

  25. pdb Says:

The XD is a nice gun, IF you like DA pistols (I don’t).

Somebody better tell Bill Wilson, so he can let XDs into SSP…

  26. Justin Buist Says:

I’ll get annoyed when they start running ads for a .410 pistol.

  27. Tam Says:

They haven’t gotten around to “sarcasm” in summer school yet, I take it?

  28. RML Says:

Tam – I got a master’s in it and a LLM in Snark.

  29. Darrell Says:

I test drove the plastic .45s a few years ago, and liked the M&P best. That said, I wound up buying a CZ instead. 😛

  31. Rob Robideau Says:

So they spend lots of $ on advertising… Get a marker and color them out of your gun rags.

  32. Jerry Says:

You would think that anyone, who might have shot themselves, in the leg, with one of those plastic contra, err, modern poly works of art, could learn to use a good thumb safety.

  33. Devietro Says:

I fully agree, and in fact I recently had a conversation with a new gun owner and asked what she bought, her response was A Springfield XD. I asked why and she said its the one she see’s in the magazines the most so she figured it was the best out there. (I almost cried) now in full disclosure I almost bought an XD in 2007 and was pretty much sold on it until I rented an M&P at my local gun range. And now I am a proud M&P owner. The idea of buying a gun because you see it advertised a lot seems dumb to me. But obviously it works.

  34. Ravenwood Says:

I had zero interest in an XD until I shot my buddy’s new XD45. He brought it to a shooting outing with some friends and complained that his shots were pulling left. I took the gun and hit dead center almost every time, set it back down and told him to adjust his trigger squeeze.

Later we had a contest for longest shot. We pasted a target at 75 feet and gave everyone two rounds. (Asking why we needed the second round) I grabbed his XD and hit the 10 ring on the first shot (after a lot of concentration, breathing, praying, etc). I immediately offered to buy it off him for a $50 premium. He refused to sell so I went out and bought one.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
