Car Blogging

I do love my tactical car. But the new 2011 Ford Mustang V6 is looking to be pretty sharp. Hits 306hp and 31 MPG! It’s a coupe, so no good for us family guys. But those are impressive stats. Granted, HP is a subjective measure but folks are putting its 0 to 60 times at about 5.5, which is about what my G37 does, and it rates at 28MPG and 328HP. So, no more leaving them in the dust.

What I’m impressed with is the mileage out of that new block. Seems like about 100 more Ponies at no change to the EPA mileage.

This is why CAFE standards are bullshit. The Auto Companies KNOW we want good mileage…tho we also want safe cars that can get out of their own way and can haul two kids and 5 sacks of groceries without too much extra planning.

My 92 Fox body wasn’t any faster than that…with 8 cylinders. Man we’ve come a long way.

  3. Weer'd Beard Says:

And I bet your mileage didn’t look that good either.

Yes we have. I dig classic cars for the looks, but when it comes to stats and efficiency forward is the only way to look.

…Unless the government gets their hands on things.

I had a turbocharged 4 cyl 1995 Eclipse that made over 300 HP and got 35 MPG on the highway, and had a sub 6 second 0-60 time. As long as you didn’t hammer it at every stoplight it would get great gas milage. Turbochargers are wonderful for that. Downside was that it needed premium gas though.

  5. Jim W Says:

The downside of turbochargers is that they run richer at full power. So higher brake specific fuel consumption, basically. Which is mostly a racing consideration I suppose. For a car that mostly gets driven at partial power and idle, a turbocharger is an ideal way to make extra power on an occasional basis.

Most of the other downsides to turbos were from the old days when fuel injection was primitive, turbine and compressor wheel designs were primitive and companies mostly didn’t know how to properly design engines around them.

They’re the lifeblood of the modern diesel; I would think the advances in injector technology have a lot to do with the great efficiency and reliability you see today.

Impressively, both the V6 and V8 new Mustangs are naturally-aspirated, and that bloody light-block V6 puts out almost as many horses as my 2008 V8. And gets significantly better mileage than mine. *sigh*

Now, that Taurus SHO… that thing’s “ecoboost” is a modern marvel of performance and efficiency.

The glycerin gives me a headache, the methane, a boner. Damn thee, blessed nitro. Look, no, think, big engine, low compression, more boost. It equals really fasssssst car. Small engine, high compression, more boost, you also have a really fassssst car. You also have a hand grenade, waiting to happen. Give me a 400 anything, turbo charge it, it will propel any car at a respectable rate. To quote a VERY famous builder of fine automobiles, “You can’t turn a pig into a racecar, but, you can build a really fast pig.” Best be very careful with the choice you make, in pig terms, I mean. If you want to ‘soup’ something up, you need to know what you are doing. If you don’t, asses have been bitten before, they will be again.

How does the infinity outrun challengers when the R/T runs 5.0s stock? The 5.7 HEMI V8 runs 372HP at 400 ft/lbs of torque. It might outrun the SE (V6, 250HP @ 250 ft/lbs), but the R/T has a distinct advantage. It squeezes out 3 more HP with the manual transmission, 2 more ft/lbs. It’s a solid 13’s quarter-mile run, and can squeeze down into the 12’s and 11’s with basic bolt-on modifications. That’s not even thinking about the SRT8, which has a much larger and more powerful engine (that also puts highway MPG in the teens).

The new mustang looks fairly nice. I’ve never been one for the new mustang look, I’m more of a retro-style kind of guy, but I can’t deny it does look nice.

guess the same reason a 500hp truck doesn’t necessarily make the most of its power.

  11. Jerry Says:

It’s a truck. It doooooe’s what trucks do. It will STILL scare the living shit out of you, but it is still a truck. I don’t care how fast it is.

    THIS is tactical: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Likecool/~3/hL2dBGwvlxs/Knight_XV–Suv–Car.html

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
