More Kagan and Guns

LA Times:

According to records at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark., she also drafted an executive order restricting the importation of certain semiautomatic assault rifles.

And:

A centrist course meant negotiating with the firearms industry on a deal to put child-safety locks on guns rather than risk a legislative showdown. Gun-control efforts were a hallmark of the Clinton administration. Kagan had already been involved in an executive order that required all federal law enforcement officers to install locks on their weapons.

Those moves angered the National Rifle Assn., which became even more alarmed in late 1998 when Clinton proposed closing the “gun show” loophole that allowed firearms purchases without background checks. A legislative effort to do just that was launched as Kagan departed the White House for Harvard in 1999.

Richard Feldman, a former firearms lobbyist who helped broker the trigger-lock deal with Emanuel, said the NRA could make trouble for Kagan simply because she was part of the White House efforts at the time. “They’ll try to use it against her,” Feldman said. “They’ll find a memo.”

Some “centrist”.

I’m not sure how much I’d hold that against her. Not saying she’s on our side or anything, but when you’re White House Counsel, when the President comes to you and says he needs an executive order, you draft an executive order. That’s why the President hired you, after all.

Newsflash. Guns are not the only issue in the world. Many conservatives have done the same.

  3. SayUncle Says:

other newsflash, this is a gun blog!!!11eleven.

Worst case scenario: she’s a leftist replacing a leftist. However, I believe that Barack Obama is so incompetent that it seems probable that he would accidentally pick someone who wasn’t as far left as he hoped.

    __________

Really? Many conservatives drafted gun control EOs for President Clinton?

  6. ATLien Says:

you know, the only to stop this bullshit about “gun show loopholes” is to have someone hit a journalist in the head with a hammer, every time they mention it.

  7. ATLien Says:

And Darwin, the 2nd amendment is the only one that it seems to be ok to keep fucking with. That’s why it’s a very important issue.

Or maybe the President isn’t the flaming Lefty terror of right wing fevered imagination. And I say that as a Lefty who voted Green in the last election but is as pro-gun, pro-2nd Amendment as any of you here.

  9. Rivrdog Says:

ATLien, if you follow the news, from all sources, not just Fox, you will note that this Administration is making many attacks on the First Amendment.

All the dictators who ever wrote it all down have said that free expressions, not unrestricted weapons, are their greatest enemy.

It’s telling that this Administration thinks like a dictatorship, don’t you think?

    _________

“Power flows from the barrel of a gun. The Party must command the guns so that the guns can never be used to command the party”-Mao Tse Tung

Liberty is meaningless without the means to defend it. They really should have put the 2nd Amendment first.

Really? Is that why he had THE MOST liberal voting record in the senate?
    Give me a break.

Newsflash: that’s the best case scenario, too. “Only case scenario” is more apropos. The only silver lining here, if there is one, is that being the judicial lightweight that she is, she may be less effective than Stevens was at persuading Justice Kennedy to lurch left every now and then.

Great … your lefty who is pro-gun

that’s like being anti-capitalism and asking someone to pay 15$ to come watch your mockumentory.

I also know people who are pro-abortion but anti-death penalty

all of the above are lefty and yes also stupid

  14. phigmeta Says:

what makes her scary is her idea that executive orders can and should be ultimately binding.

Or do you folks not remember executive order 9066

    yes its STILL VALID
