Odd gun case

Man accused of having an unregistered short barreled rifle and silencer. Seems he had what he thought was a pistol and an oil can that he was using as a flash suppressor. 7th Circuit overturns conviction.

I bought one of those “backyard silencers” books at a gun show about 10 years ago, and in it there was a whole section on using oil filters as silencers. Based on the description of the guy in the article, I’d bet he’s seen that document, too.

But it’s good to know that defense will work 😀

    The article said “clip” ;D

Alan Klebig hung dozens of squirrel tails and shiny CDs around his Watertown yard, monitored it with security cameras and kept containers of unlabeled caustic chemicals around his house.

Irrelevant information in the first paragraph to paint him as mentally unstable? Check.

He also had a couple of dozen guns, including a loaded shotgun he kept by the front door, which had a sign that read, “Nothing here is worth dying for.”

Alarmist phrasing over the number of firearms he owns? Check. Imply that he is a threatening and violent person by placing one item out of context? Check.

But while he may have been considered eccentric,

Legal-CYA sentence made to look like a snarky comment – again emphasizing the earlier implied mental instability? Check.

a jury convicted Klebig, 52, of knowingly possessing an unregistered rifle[.]

Erroneously imply that the item in question was a normal rifle (and thus imply that all rifles must be registered), not a short-barreled-rifle? Check.

All those layers of editorial oversight sure do ensure that there’s no bias in their reporting, don’t they?

The lesson here is if you are a little weird have a very good bloodsucking attorney.

Jake: Wonderful analysis of the bias. Thanks.

I’ve known Judge Rovner forever. She swore me in to the federal bar. (Her late husband worked with my wife.) She’s a pretty cool lady for a judge.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
