papers please

Nashville liberal radio show host ponders:

So the same folks who want to require a birth certificate to register to vote also want to remove the birth certificate requirement to apply for or renew a handgun carry permit (see HB 2718 by Rep. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville).

Someone’s priorities are way screwed up not to mention unpatriotic and dangerous.

First, I guess the accusations of patriotism depend on which way the wind blows. Next, once we start licensing rights, the qualifications tend to get more and more in depth.

Coincidentally, I renewed my carry permit yesterday. I did not have to show a birth certificate. And last I voted, I didn’t have to either.

Clenched-fist salute ACK.

The other difference is that one is listed in the Constitution, the other is not.

I’m not sure I follow the birth cert for voting. Proof of citizenship, sure. But we have citizens who where not born here.

On the flip side, I don’t believe being a citizen should matter to the carrying of a firearm. Non-citizens are allowed to buy firearms. Why should we not allow them to carry said firearm for self defense?

I’d bet that my thinking is reversed from the lefties though.

I never had a birth certificate. Neither did my brothers or my parents. We had secondary evidence — for “the boys” a certificate of registry of birth in the township’s records and our church’s baptismal records, for my mother only our church’s baptismal records.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
