G.I. Curious

The gunny blogs are doing the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell debate. Most excitement can be seen at The Nerds’ place.

Update: Views from a socially conservative, politically liberal former Marine

Not sure who started it, but I put a post up on this about a week ago. “There are ALREADY gays serving in the military!” Everyone repeat that 5 times. The world hasn’t come to an end.

  2. ModlCitzn Says:

Uhm, my time in the Marines didn’t help me see the benefits of homos. Sure they can be funny and nice, but the job of the Marine Corps is to kill people, tough job as it is, not to pack fudge. If gayness isn’t part of your job and shouldn’t have a relevance, what’s wrong with dont ask dont tell? I knew a dyke in my platoon, and yes just anecdotally she didn’t make it all that hidden but it was tolerated. What I couldn’t tolerate was her terrible attitude and general inability to contribute. She thankfully joined the army and joined the rest of her kind.

I’ve seen this type of P.C. crap building over the years. We were inspected one time for the “sexual harassment” climate, and needless to say it was strong. It was conducted on a saturday morning by someone just walking around the sections and we got the report with actual stories at the COs breifing
and that was some funny stuff!

I’m confident this is just another step to persecute and divide our military, been happening for decades but you’d think some conservatives would be supportive of holding the line. Maybe soon they’ll let everyone shower together like in Starship Troopers and unicorns will fart rainbows.

I had the privilege of working at the Naval Research Lab in DC for a few years. Their library there, along with lotsa research journals, contains Navy publications going back to the 1930’s at least. Browsing the stacks one day, I found the official Navy report on the integration of blacks as Navy officers.

The Navy did a very smart thing. They took the best among Negro Navy Chief Petty Officers to enter Officer Candidate School and become officers. OF course, these excellent NCOs made excellent officers, paving the way for quick, complete acceptance in the Navy of Negro OCS candidates who did not have prior Navy experience – just like all the white candidates, they were selected on merit.

Perhaps something similar could be done with homosexual officers and enlisted men? Demonstrate their acceptability as service men and women to all, and then ignore their sexual status after that.

I was also privileged to attend the Navy stand-down for anti-sexual harrassment training while at NRL. What a crock that was.

  4. Cargosquid Says:

Before anything is done, Congress has to amend the UCMJ and remove the article making sodomy illegal. THEN, homosexuals will be able to come out. Or do we just ignore the law…….

  5. Burke Says:

I don’t think the gov’t belongs in anybody’s personal life. I don’t condone homosexuality, but neither do I condone, kicking in people’s door to cart people off for what goes on in their bedroom. Basically, I support freedom. Freedom for consenting adults to make choices as far as those choices don’t harm others or cause a burden to society. You can have gay sex, smoke, or drink yourself to oblivion, but don’t expect the taxpayers to pay your medical bills for treatments of STDs, cancer, and cirrhosis of the liver. Make your choices and takes your consequences.

That being said, that also means freedom to disagree with your lifestyle and even call it such things as immoral or sinful.

All that aside, the thing that bugs me the most is not some much the issue, but the that reason for change/acceptance is not based on new information but political correctness. PC decisions have no business in the military. PC decisions cost 14 people their lives at Fort Hood.

Personally, I am more concerned about allowing Muslims to serve in the military. Any Muslim currently serving in the U.S. armed forces is disloyal, either to the U.S. or to his/her religion. I tend to distrust people who claim religion and then spit in its face.

  6. Lyle Says:

Uh, if you’re gay chances are everyone else already knows. It was funny when by brother-in-law decided to “come out of the closet” and announce that he was gay. Dude– like we hadn’t known all along? Seriously.

  7. ModlCitzn Says:

being gay isn’t a choice lyle, it genetic.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
