Fan Boys

Comparing love of the iPhone to Stockholm Syndrome. I dunno. I’d say any fan boy of any item is probably in a similar boat.

Those ipaq fans are scarier, though. How they rip apart stuff like flash, multi-tasking, and e-ink because the ipaq cannot handle it.

I have an iphone. It’s an annoying device. I have it because of the touch screen though. It works. If any of the alternate smart phones touch screens worked as well, I’d sell this thing and get which ever screen worked as well under a driod or winmobile platform.

I can’t find any that do though. That’s a damn drag.

Pretty much everything else about the phone is annoying, except the ability to make the ipod function work by clicking the mike on the earbuds.

    ZOMG MISSING FEETURS????111??11

Let’s see, my phone doesn’t have a keyboard! Or a cord!!! Or a sixteen pound brick battery! You know what else it doesn’t have? An outboard motor! There’s no Retsin in it! And there’s no FORTRAN compiler!

(I actually had trouble coming up with stuff, because it can do some of the things that I wanted to say, like bullshit climate modeling and there really is a tactical version to put on your AR-15.)

Actually, my one big complaint about it is that the voice control never works. Ever. The only — only command I’ve ever gotten it to take correctly is “shuffle”. Anything else, and it gives me something random instead.

I like my iPhone because it’s the best phone I can get.

When a better phone comes around, I’ll want one of those.

(Flash is not a feature. Flash is a bug. Flash crashes browsers and makes computers slow and it’s the fucking Devil.

And yes, I’ve seen the Droid. My coworker has one. It’s almost as good.

And no, I’ll never consider Windows Mobile. I’ve used too many Windows Mobile devices to do anything but laugh at them, and I’d murder someone who tried to make me use one for my phone.)

There’s a difference, I think, between liking something awesome and being a fanboy.

Fanboys are emotionally invested in their choice being “the right one” or “the best one” or “the most popular one” (or “the underdog that’s better but the losers don’t know it!”) – people who just like something awesome are happy when something more awesome comes along, not sad that they no longer have the most awesome thing.

Even people who hate Apple products (anti-Fanboys) should be happy about the iPhone, because it raised the bar.

  7. Tomcatshanger Says:

See, the only bar the iPhone raised was for touch screens.

Pretty much everything else is inferior, but the fact that it is the input device really is the key.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
