I’ve always thought that “one handgun a month” proviso was weird, but I don’t know if I would agree it’s “onerous”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for getting rid of it, but…
It doesn’t apply if you have a concealed carry permit.
It’s like a ritual, when you get your concealed carry you go buy two handguns.

I like VA laws (I came her from NY mostly), you can buy as many rifles as you want, you can buy a pistol and as many rifles in a month, no magazine restrictions, it costs $15 to get a “sawed off shotgun permit” and there’s no waiting period, you just stroll in, pick out your gun, get a background check (15 minutes to an hour or so) and off you go.
Except for knives, Texas has more restrictions on shipping from Cheaper than Dirt than Virginia.

The best part about this, to me, is that this makes me hope that conservatives are taking VA back. I’m sick of the commies in Arlington spreading out to take over the rest of NoVa.

  2. Wolfwood Says:

Whoa, Veeshir, Virginia only requires that for a sawed off shotgun? I wish I’d known that when I was there. Do you know what the official form is called?

    Dear Washington Examiner,
In your next article about handguns, please do not show a Micro Uzi in your photo.

The bills here are nice, and should all be passed, but VA still needs to see bills that:
-allow patrons to carry guns in restaurants that serve alcohol
-allow students with CHPs to carry on campus (at least of state schools) without fear of academic sanction
-allow open carry of firearms in state parks
-strengthen legal protection for gun clubs and shooting ranges that antedate nearby residential areas

One-Gun-A-Month can be annoying, but it shouldn’t be a priority except as low-hanging fruit. I can see far more times when a CHP by a university student or patron of a state park could be needed than when a person will need to buy two handguns in a month (given there being no limit on long guns and a person getting a credit if they sell the dealer another handgun).

He doesn’t, because there’s no such thing. The only registration in Virginia is for machineguns, it’s form SP-115, and it’s free.

What would be nice, in addition to Wolfwood’s list, is getting rid of the Uniform Machinegun Act and gutting the Streetsweeper ban. Both are useless, and the former wastes taxpayer money.

  4. Veeshir Says:

Ummmm, sorry, but there is. I’ll find out exactly what the form is on Saturday and get back to you.

I’ve discussed it with the owner of my favorite gun store, Va. Arms in Manassas.
My buddy is looking for a beat up double barrel to saw off is how the conversation started.

  5. dave Says:

Wolfwood, we (VA) can already carry guns in restaurants that serve alcohol. Concealed carry there, however, is another matter (maybe that’s what you were referring to?).

  6. Diomed Says:

Sorry Veeshir. You can’t produce what doesn’t exist. I’ll make it easy for you – COV § 18.2-300 et seq. is the “Sawed-Off Shotgun and Sawed-Off Rifle Act”. Where in there does it specify state registration?

Or I can make it really easy and say look at the state police website FAQ under “Are firearms registered in Virginia?”, or the VSP’s firearms forms at http://www.vsp.state.va.us/FormsPublications.shtm#Firearms

The appeal to gun shop authority won’t wash, since most dealers don’t know the laws, whether they have a SOT or not.

In other words, don’t let gunshop bullshit keep you from doing something you want to do. The only hoops for short shotguns in VA are federal.

  7. Veeshir Says:

Diomed, I replied in a later thread, it’s an ATF form that’s legal in VA.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
