SayUncle: Law breaker

Me and the family went to the Foothills Fall Festival, a pretty big to-do here in The City (My The City). Every year, they shut down a couple of blocks in down town to traffic, get some musical acts, some arts and crafts booths, a few bounce houses for kids, and all manner of good food including funnel cakes and ribbon fries (ribbon fries are awesome, by the way). We parked near down town and went and looked at the various nifty items for sale at the crafts area (including bat boxes and can-jos). We saw a 1,000 pound pumpkin and some tractors. And then, I crossed the line into a (gasp!) public park. At that point, I was violating the law since The City (My The City) opted out of park carry and I had my G-30.

Up to that point, I was on public streets and in a coffee house. In the latter, I was surrounded by hipster doofuses (doofi?). I didn’t know we had those in The City (My The City) as I’d never seen one before.

Anyway, at some point I looked up and realized I was actually in a park. I didn’t really notice entering the park until I was there. I’m a criminal.

    Bad Uncle!

I find no gun zones so odd. You’re perfectly legal and not a threat to society on a public street with thousands of people. You step one foot off the sidewalk into a park and you’re suddenly a criminal.

Oh how a couple of inches literally separates us from being law abiding or criminals.

I don’t recall seeing anything about the mass slaughter of innocents that must have occurred milliseconds after your transgression. How could you have resisted the evil mind-control rays that immediately emanated from your carry gun once you stepped over the imaginary line?

    Get used to it.

On the bright side, if you don’t print too badly or have to use the 30 defensively, you’ll be fine.

  6. SayUncle Says:

Tom, Tennessee has an odd law that basically states if you use a firearm for lawful defense then that is an affirmative defense from prosecution to laws regarding carrying. Not sure if the law would apply to city laws, though.

I think in order to ensure you do not make that mistake again, you should turn over all of your firearms related items to me for safekeeping.

I’ll be there this weekend to pick them up.
What size trailer should I bring?

Just out of curiousity, (since I am sure this is a post that was really about hypothetically crossing the line between honest citizen and misdemeanor illegal carry applicant), was there any visible signage informing you that park carry is illegal?

Or when wandering about the festival, were you supposed to know where the legal sidewalk ended and the park sidewalk began?

I suppose using hipster congregations would be a clue, but likely they are not legally dispositive.

    No signs that I noticed.

Still, you’re better off than I. In California, if you open carry within 15k’ of a school you’re a criminal. There is no requirement the school be identifiable as such.

California here also. 15k’=15,000 feet? I thought it was 1,000 feet for K-12 (PC626.9).

  12. Huck Says:

I did a double take on that too Scott. 15,000 feet is almost 3 miles! I dont think even Crazyfornia is THAT crazy!

  13. Lyle Says:

“I dont think even Crazyfornia is THAT crazy!”

Give ’em time. All they need is more time.

Hey, I know what you should do: Confess to a “crime” on your blog. What could possibly go wrong??

“This is not the gun you were looking for.”
