Quote of the Day

Survivalist Blog:

personally I think the whole stopping power debate is a load of crap and a waste of time. Get a reliable weapon and learn to shoot.

Amen. A dangerous and determined PERSON can use whatever is at hand.

I agree. The American Rifleman mag and other self defense outlets are chock full stories of ordinary cizizens stopping crime/protecting themselves with .22 wheel guns and semi’s. I think what a lot of people miss is that the visual and auditory effects of a firearm (click, BANG!) used in a self defense situation is most times just as effective as the weight in grains passing out of the barrel. In terms of stopping power? Maybe not so much. But in terms of “Goddamn! This homeowner is packing SOMETHING and I value my pathetic life a lot more than his/her flat-screen TV” is a significant factor.

I own more than a couple 1911’s but more times than not, I carry a 9×18 Makarov. I’m more concernd about concealability, dexterity, and weight of the firearm than I am about stopping power.

The best weapon for stopping the bad guy is the one you have with you, close at hand, and know how to use. Anything else is no use.
I carried at various times an M1 rifle, an M2 carbine, a shotgun, or a .45 in the Army, yet when it came time to buy my own handgun, I bought a 9 mm. I do not leave the house without my pistol. At night it’s by my bed. As I sit here there’s another 9 mm in the drawer of my (at home) desk. So far this year I have fired about 500 rds .22 (pistol and rifle), 250 rds .30 carbine, 50 rds .30-06 (M2 Ball, Garand), 16 rds .303 British, and over 700 rounds of 9 mm, mostly FMJ but some JHP just to make sure they feed right. Close at hand and know how to use it; shoot center of mass until the threat is over. And pray to God I never need to.

There’s a story somewhere about a man who got a 2-inch diameter crowbar from one side of his head and through the other and survived. He even talked normally to the firemen who were sawing it off.

Shot placement with a handgun is an iffy thing. There’s no telling where that bullet is going hit, which is why just firing at someone at all, is the basis of it being legally regarded as the same thing as trying to kill that person. Where’s my .55 ACP?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
