Weapon of choice for lion hunters

The LAPD on the FN FiveseveN:

Authorities have noticed an increase in high-caliber weapons in Los Angeles. One of the most startling incidents was when a Fabrique National 57, an assault pistol used to kill big game, was found in a victim’s car by detectives investigating a double-homicide last year in North Hollywood.

“You use it on large lions, tigers and bears,” said LAPD Deputy Chief Michel Moore, commander of the Valley Bureau.

The FiveseveN, coincidentally, is banned in California.

I don’t think I’d want to shoot the equivalent of a 22 magnum at bears, it might just piss them off. Don’t get me wrong, I love my FiveseveN. However, a big-game pistol it is not.

  2. mike w. Says:

Lions, Tigers & Bears oh my!

Who in there right mind would use a FiveSeven against a bear?

  3. ExUrbanKevin Says:

“Detective Moore went on to say that his department recently confiscated a number of pistols firing .22 Long Rifle cartridges, a high-power round that packs much more firepower than .22 Short. ‘Those kind of pistols serve no sporting purpose,’ Detective Moore said, ‘They’re terrorist weapons, plain and simple.'”

  4. Phelps Says:

I’m pretty sure that you will only use it to hunt big game once.

  5. Weer'd Beard Says:

Wow, that Lions Tigers and Bear line was funny. But the fact that this goon’s name is Michel Moore really got me gigglin’

A rose by any other name…but what about another thing called “A Rose” never heard of it, but it appears to work here.

  6. Chas Says:

The FN 57 is seriously underpowered for any of the animals the commander mentioned. I think he was trying to be politically correct, in an anti-gun way, and ended up sounding like an ignorant fool.

  7. MacSaorsa Says:

I’m pretty sure you could use it against lions, tigers, or bears. Or raiders, buccaneers, vikings, or any other football team.

  8. Achmed Says:

The FN 57 isn’t banned in California. I just saw one at Turner’s not all that long ago. Granted, they have to be sold with ten round magazines, but they aren’t banned yet…

  9. harleycowboy Says:

Lions, Tigers AND Bears? Good luck with that one. Let me know how that turns out for you.

  10. Brian Says:

Wow. If the 57 will take down those animals, then my .380 must be an anti-tank weapon.

  11. Huck Says:

Moore IS a fool, and it’s damn nice of him to prove it in public.

Sue Doyle, is also a fool, “assault pistol” indeed!

  12. JKB Says:

You know Fabrique National might have been a clue that the gun is in metric. The boys in the LAPD must be so proud of their commander.

Pistols can be very effective in protecting you from bears. You shoot the other guy in the foot so you can out run him.

  13. Justin Buist Says:

Maybe Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago Bears.

  14. Stuart_the_Viking Says:

WOW! I gots to get me one of THESE!!! Lions, tigers, AND bears, all in a platform that my 5 year old could handle the recoil of! Sweet~

  15. Arizona Rifleman Says:

When I lived in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Zoo sent their zookeepers to a range where I volunteered as a safety officer.

They fired, if my memory serves me right, .458 Winchester Magnum which is good tiger medicine. Being zookeepers, there is a non-zero chance that they’d actually need to use their rifles on tigers.

I suspect that if I suggested that they use Five-seveN pistols for tigers, I’d get laughed out of the room.

  17. Nylarthotep Says:

“high caliber”? When did 5.7mm become high caliber?

Who in the hell researched this article. Oh wait, they didn’t. Forgot this wasn’t a news piece but a propaganda piece.

The comments are quite humorous though.

  18. ben Says:

Well, the latest CNN article on the tactics that evolved out of mass shootings says that the guy who shot up the McDonald’s in San Diego in the 80’s

… fired about 30 armor-piercing rounds [from his uzi] at the officer, who could hear them striking metal posts and skipping off the asphalt.

The bunk flows freely from the MSM.

  19. Lyle Says:

I had a former LAPD cop tell me his .45 ACP would shoot through a car’s engine block. This is par for the course, I’m afraid.

I’ve lived in the more rural areas of Eastern Washington and North Idaho all my life, and I never saw so many backward, ignorant, redneck, full-of-shit, phony-baloney, plastic banana yahoos as I’ve met in and around Anaheim, California (which includes LA for those you in Reo Linda). That may be offensive to some, but it’s none the less true. I think most of the more capable or motivated citizens left California long ago, seeking greener pastures.

  20. Kim du Toit Says:

Errrr did I miss the memo?

What the hell IS a “high-caliber” gun?

I’ve heard of “large-caliber” guns, and “high-powered” guns, but “high-caliber”? Why not “large-powered” while we’re about it?

    F*cking moron.

  21. ErnestThing Says:

    More FUD…

BTW, the five seven is not banned in California… at least, not yet…

  22. Mike M. Says:

Kim, a high-caliber gun is one that fires a shell 12 inches or more in diameter. 🙂

  23. Gun Shy Tourist Says:

    quote:
“The FiveseveN, coincidentally, is banned in California.”

EVERYTHING is banned in Kalifornia. I just returned to Florida from there last year. The San Fran liberals have done to the state of Kalifornia, what the New York city liberals have done to the state of New York. Pelosi and pals have torn the pioneer spirit out of the people of Kalifornia in my opinion. I hope they come to their senses soon.

  24. straightarrow Says:

my comment at the article: “How does anyone so ignorant rise to any level of authority in any field of endeavor. If Deputy Chief Michael Moore wants to go Lion or bear hunting with what is basically a .22 caliber handgun, I vote we take a collection and send him. Of course we’ll never see hide nor hair of him again, unless someone does DNA analysis on bear or lion droppings.

Oh wait, we can avoid seeing him again if someone just administers him a strong laxative. “

  25. Clint Says:

Remember there is NO “Fiftyseven” (57) by FN. There is however a FN FiveseveN (5-7). Also note, it was the *reporter* who called it a “high-caliber” weapon. Now, if some non-gun type asked my about a “57 High-Caliber weapon” I would probably respond “Oh, you mean the old 577 NE, those are for Elephant guns.”

Sorry, while I doubt the Chief is well versed in gun tech, this looks way too much like a reporter asking stupid questions, the kind where the idiot was (i)so bad(/i) at asking that the questions didn’t even relate to what the idiot meant to ask about. Especially considering the repeated use of the non-existent phrase “High-caliber;” it seems the “staff writer” is an anti-gun bigot who doesn’t know anything about guns except there baaaaddddd……

  26. Tom Stelene Says:

That is a strange story! Is that because there is more to it, or does it seem strange because of shoddy reporting?

Here’s my question: Does Moore really believe what he said?

In other words, is he that ignorant – or did he knowingly say nonsense? Why would one do that?

Well, what resulted? FNH got a p.r. black eye. Maybe Moore has an axe to grind with them (legitimately or not) and an easy way to do that is to talk about their weapons in the kind of language that anti-gun, ignorant reporters would eat right up! – and the public will then acccept. Yeah, he looks stupid in the eyes of the relatively few people who are knowledgeable but that might not matter if he had a more important purpose in mind. I went to FN’s site and they have a ‘FN facts’ page denying anti-gun allegations about them, so there must be other bad press out there.

The absurd ‘assault pistol’, ‘high-caliber’ and the quote from the Wizard of Oz makes me think that maybe he’s being sarcastic – for his own reason – and the gun-illiterate reporter would not know that.

Then again maybe he’s just stupid – or an anti-gun smear artist.

  27. DAve Says:

    To quote from his bio:

Deputy Chief Moore has completed the Education and Skills assessment of the Motorola University six-sigma Green Beret program

What are they teaching the SF guys these days anyways?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
