They’re the only ones….

Years ago, I attempted to write a novel about a potential future Civil War in the US. One of the criminal gangs who sold weapons to the Partisans would steal firearms from cops and Peace Keeping forces by ambushing them and coating them in a flammable liquid and then demanding their guns be surrendered. The cop can’t shoot, because the muzzle flash would conceivably ignite the liquid, and even if the cop was burned alive, the gun would be largely unaffected, and likely dropped.
I was writing it in answer to my friends who were political but refused to be involved, saying: “We’ll just kill all the bastards when the revolution comes.” I was attempting to make it as dark as possible, like the wars in feudal Europe where there is no good guys and ultimately, there is no right. The story got more and more morbid, and I had to stop writing it.
