Changes to TN handgun carry permit process

So reports News Channel 3 that the renewal process now requires a birth certificate or passport. I’ve not had to renew mine in a while so I don’t know. Anyone experience this?

I don’t think they were enforcing it until recently, but I did notice the requirement a while back. I haven’t had to renew mine yet but will soon.

    Just read here:

    http://www.state.tn.us/safety/driverlicense/dlcitizen.htm

that, “No photocopies will be accepted!”.

Surely they don’t mean for us to send in our original documents and expect them to care for them properly and return them quickly.

I’ve sent an e-mail asking for clarification. If I don’t hear back soon I’ll try calling them.

When they changed the requirements for a new permit to prove citizenship they also changed for renewals. You unfortunately either have to send them a certified copy (with raised seal and all – usually a duplicate from the state you were born in) or go in, show it to them, and they will check off a list and make their own photocopy and return your original.

Yes. I renewed last month, and had to take my passport with me. It essentially makes it impractical to mail in your renewal, so you must go in and wait. I started at 10 AM on a Monday morning, and finally got processed at 2 PM. A lady with a screaming toddler was in line just in front of me and was there the entire time. The hilariously obese dude calling the numbers would mock people after they had left, offering commentary on their hairdo, body odor, and in one case the limp of a young man with a prosthetic leg.

I wrote for a certified copy, and went the mail route. It was just easier at the time. Still waiting, but it’s only been a couple of weeks.

Yeah, TN requires this for new drivers licenses, too. They have a list of approved documents. Your DD214 will work (if the nice lady at the counter knows what that is).

I just renewed this week. Yes. I was shocked when the TDOT worker told me I had to have a birth cert. I pointed out that I had to provide one when I applied originally. Therefore it didn’t make sense to require another copy to renew. I was told “Those are the rules.”

  8. Big T Says:

Yes this is true. The requirement is a certified copy of your birth certificate, or passport. No photocopies allowed. All I had to do was go the the local Health Dept. and have one printed, I think it cost about $8.00 and you get it within 5 minutes. It takes about a long time to get it back via U.S.Mail. I renewed mine back on January 29, 2009 and finally got it May 2 after making a couple of calls to the State.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
