Competition

Caleb has a bit on Getting started in competitive shooting.

People ask me why I don’t shoot competition and I tell them it’s because the math is hard. Still, I should just shoot whatever classes the firearms I carry fit in.

    Don’t worry about the math. The scorer will do all that. I know plenty of people who compete that are only moderately interested in their scores, anyway. They’re there for trigger time or just for the fun of it.

    I am not one of those people.

    That’s pretty scary coming from a bean counter….

    I’m glad that in my area our local shooting interest group on Meetup.com held two “Intro to…” class on IDPA and USPSA; No scoring, any gun ok, etc. It was a nice, slow approach to familiarize people with the rules, etc.

    At the Intro to USPSA, I used my Springfield XD Compact .45 acp, one of my regular carry guns. I later found out that my 13-round extended mags would normally be illegal in USPSA. Good to know that. Plus I use a CTC laser sight on that gun, which again would catapult me into a different category.

    For the IDPA “Intro to” class, I used my CZ-75B in .40 S&W, which is NOT a regular carry gun of mine because of its size/weight, and the fact that I only have a paddle holster for it (actually a SIG 226 holster, but it works);

    After this class, I have decided to buy a quality IWB for my CZ, just to see how it works as a “carry gun”. I’d have to carry “cocked and locked”, so I’d probably apply the manual safety. It would be good in competition to do the same, so that I train myself consistently to flick off the safety first before lining up the target and pulling the trigger.

    I don’t apply the safety on my Bersa .380 Thunder (even though it has one) because of the decocking lever, which the CZ lacks. I just decock it after racking the slide then holster it, which makes the first shot double action.

    I’m also getting some spare mag holders for my CZ and for my Taurus PT92. The PT92 is mainly a winter carry gun for me because of its size and the fact I only have a paddle holster, but it’s perfect (no lasers or other mods) for plain jane competition shooting.

    JJ, that’s why I am a fan of the GSSF. A glock fits into one or more categories. There’s no drawing. it’s the gateway drug to competitive shooting.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
