Potential terrorist?

DHS takes an interest in a man for buying 1,000 rounds of ammo:

West said a customer of his recently stocked up on .223-caliber rounds, a caliber often used in assault-style weapons. The customer bought 1,000 rounds a few months ago through a mail order company.

Shortly after the purchase, he received a visit from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, whose interest was apparently piqued by a large-scale purchase of that caliber.

Large scale? Hardly. Sounds more like a fun weekend to me. Well, I usually buy it 500 at a time. Probably explains why I haven’t had a visit.

Being investigated for 1k rounds is nuts. Hell, investigating an American for exercising their fundamental human right to any extent is nuts. Anecdotally, I just bought 1k rounds of .45 ACP for a weekend class, it will only last two days.

Over one thousand rounds?! That’s not investigation. It’s harassment.

I used to buy in 1000 blocks all the time from ammunitionstore.com when I was more liquid…I wonder why I’ve never gotten a visit.

“His wife was home. He was at church,” West said.

Well that explains it. That’s radical behavior right there. Now if he’d been at a mosque then they wouldn’t have dared question the purchase.

But let’s see: BATFE has jurisdiction on guns and ammo, FBI has jurisdiction on terrorism, state and local have jurisdiction on non-federal laws, what exactly is the DHS after if not making a list?

  5. LibertyNews Says:

I’d like to know how DHS got their information. Where did he buy it from and what are they doing reporting their customer’s buying habits to the government?

  6. B Smith Says:

Wow. That’s pretty chilling. I agree with LN, though, must’ve been someone who ratted. I know far too many people who buy cases at a time, unless they are just starting to randomly check.
Still, maybe I’ll just sock some away down in the sooper seekrit underground bunker that we dangerous, revolutionary types all have… 😉

The UPS guy dropped off 2k of loaded .223 just a few weeks ago to go along with the two separate 2k orders of .223 brass the previous month. No one’s dropped by my house yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if I was on some sort of list to keep an eye on.

Enjoy your freedom. It may have a short shelf life.

  9. Lyle Says:

Jesse; they’re probably afraid to visit you. Anti-freedom cultist/activists and general thugs are after all cowards by nature.

I must be on all the lists. I’ve haven’t had less than about 5K rounds on hand at any time over the last 10 years at home, usually a lot more, with more still at my places of work, not counting any of the smokeless and black powder and other components.

  10. Linoge Says:

Bah. I never buy ammunition in lots smaller than 1k, and I have never had a visit.

I have to echo LibertyNews’ comment – who the hell is reporting our lawful commerce, to whom, and why?

  11. Matt Groom Says:

    Appropriate reaction:
    “Do you have a warrant?”
“No, sir/ma’am. We would just like-”
    “Go fuck yourselves.”
(slams door, sound of dead bolt locking)

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
