States’ Rights

A bill that would relinquish the State of Tennessee from federal obligations under the REAL ID Act of 2005. . Good. Lately, snubbing the feds seems to be a theme in many state legislatures.

Nose-snubbing for nose-snubbing’s sake isn’t good, it’s childish and petulant. What exactly is it about the Real ID Act you don’t like, and is having a driver license that the federal government and other states won’t recognize as identification really worth it?

Gosh, where to begin. For starters, the federal government has an unfortunate history of using things that they promise will never be used as a “national ID” as just that. What a cock-up the SS# became. Then, this one unloads all the cost and responsibiity for verification onto the states, unrecompensed. And despite the current dustup over undocumented aliens, there’s a tradition of opposition to citizen ID cards that’s not the exclusive province of the tin-foil hat set. What is The Federalist if not a little nose-snubbing, from time to time, of the tyrant? It’s part of being a Southerner. Always has been.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
