Stock your bar

An article on stocking your bar on a budget since economic times are tough. Uhm, shouldn’t you maybe forgo stocking your bar if economic times are tough?

There are are a few recession proof industries (drugs – including alcohol & tobacco; sex; and gambling) so maybe not.

And I do concur, Evan Williams is pretty darn good for the price.

I drank Evan Williams black label for a little while because Chuck Hawks recommended it as the best cheap bourbon, but I got to the point I couldn’t tolerate the taste even when mixed.

The cheapest bourbon that I think is any good is Early Times. About 10 bucks (for a fifth or a liter, I forget).

That’s when you need to stock your bar the most….

Bacardi Light Rum: “It’s a staple for a reason,” – so is turpentine and Hoppes #9 – I’d rather drink Hoppes #9 than Bacardi Light rum – but I don’t drink the other stuff like bourbon and scotch or gin either.

Early Times isn’t a Bourbon anymore (at least not what’s sold in the US) since it’s aged in previously used barrels. Evan Williams is a good deal, but the best deals in bourbons are the ‘bottled in bonds’. Pretty much any bourbon (or rye or corn whiskey) that’s bottled in bond is a great deal. You’ll pay $10-$15 for a 750 of whiskey that as a good as any $20-$30 bottle. The best whiskey I ever had was (the sadly no longer available) Heaven Hill 10 year old bottled in bond, which I bought for $12/750ml. The Rittenhouse Rye mentioned in the article is bottled in bond. They have an 80 proof that’s good too. All BiB whiskey is 100 proof and a minimum of 4 years old. The best budget whiskey though is probably Heaven Hill’s 80 proof green label 1.75L — surprisingly good, a perfect mixing whiskey, and retails usually under $15.

    I like bourbon…

Evan Williams is my personal favorite, I’ve yet to try a whiskey I like better. But, when I discovered that I really liked it and it’s cheap, I didn’t bother much with looking further, so I’m no kind of authority.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
