Bitter has a warning:
Environmental groups are targeting pro-gun and pro-hunting legislators one at a time. They are flying under the radar by taking them out one-by-one. But by concentrating their wealth at one or two lawmakers at a time, they’ve successfully knocked off two so far.

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is not against guns or hunting. They targeted Musgrave because of her ties to oil interests, opposition to alternative energy and efforts to protect Jack Abramoff from investigation. Also, her opponent has a strong record as a conservationist. There’s not a word about guns in their commentary on the candidates, and the organization recognizes hunters as an important conservationist constituency, as do many environmentalists.
DOW’s main target in 2006 was Richard Pombo, who was actively attempting to destroy the Endangered Species Act.
