carry gun selection

Kim du Toit discusses choices.

  1. Paul Simer Says:

“Countless enemies of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps would probably attest to its effectiveness, except that they’re all dead. The .45 ACP is probably the only cartridge which is almost as effective in full metal jacket (FMJ) as it is with hollowpoints: the slow velocity means that the bullet is less likely to go through your target and carry on until it finds another (unintended) one.”

I can has objectivity, plz? Maybe some data?

I mean, there’s nothing wrong with .45. It’s a great round. I just think that worshiping at the altar of the mighty forty-five while marginalizing other selections and providing no useful research to back up one’s claims is not the way to help people make informed choices.

But I guess I have to remember that this is the Internet, where research is just too difficult to bother with.

I thought du Toit was quitting. Again. I mean it. This time for real.

  3. Paul Simer Says:

Having been our Fearless General for years and winning us a great many triumphs on the glorious field of battle, he is retiring until he is needed again.

At least, that’s what his post said. He’s quitting in November. I guess the extra time is to leave room for adulation and pleas to stay.

    🙂

  4. Mike Says:

I would point out that most small revolvers and semi-autos have sights that are hard to see for all but the experienced shooter. How well a gun hides is more a function of the holster than the size of the gun in my experience. My advice to new shooters or people new to the idea of carry is to try several pistols, find one that fits their hand in a caliber they can manage and go from there.

I don’t think caliber is as important as where they are his and the bullet you use.

  5. Ron W Says:

Whatever you get and whatever you carry…something is far better’n nothing.

I’ve decided to carry a 9mm…..a CZ 75 is my choice. Although it’s the low side of an effective caliber, I can carry 16 rds….and even an extra 16 rd mag too. With my larger .357 mag Taurus revolver, I can carry only 7 rds and another 7 if I carry a speed loader. So, if it ever comes to a shootout, I’d rather have more rounds.

Yeah, I just live for adulation, which is why I’m quitting after 14 million visitors. The extra time was for people to set up their own forum, or find another, rather than just dumping them in the crapper with a “See Ya!” notice.

Nice collection of snarks you have infesting your floorboards here, Uncle.

I’ve done a decient amount of shooting with most of the listed rounds, the .40 SW is the only one of those I have not fired, and the description of the rounds relative handling (recoil, acuuracy, penetration, etc.) are right on the money.

As for “worshiping at the altar of the mighty forty-five” it’s reputation speaks for itself. To me when it comes to a automatic, “there can be only one”. And that one is .45 ACP.

    Uhh. Touchy.

Ninth Stage, were you born being a stupid fuck, or did you have to practice?

Kim set a hard retirement date, and will continue full speed until that time.

What’s so flaming hard to understand about that? It’s as though you’re being deliberately dense.

  10. ATLien Says:

    double +1 the above.

The reason the .45 is a stopper is because it’s big. Same reason linebackers don’t weigh 150 pounds. It’s not rocket science, man. And you don’t need reams of research to state the obvious, jackalope.

  11. Ninth Stage Says:

All I’d read was that du Toit was quitting, again. This news was about as surprising as a 90 degree day in August and I gave it even less attention. Now I know there is a “hard date”, in November. And this news was delivered in such a delightful manner.

BTW, I choose “stupid fuck” (born and practiced), yep that’s me, pegged it in one.

    Cheers, happy man.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
