Too much?

So, DU is hotlinking my images. I’m torn because they’re probably on our team (i.e., pro gun) but they’re stealing my stuff. I left them a message at the post.

Let it slide or get all tub girl on them? What say you?

I would say do nothing unless they are eating bandwidth. Wait till someone not on our side hotlinks and then set phasers to lemonparty.

“They hotlinked my picture but gave me a link” is the new “they wrote bad things about me but they spelled my name right.”

Stand by to repel boarders and trolls.

I’d be ok with redirecting to goatse.jpg

I’m amazed anyone on that wretched hive of scum and villainy would link to something good and positive.

    Regards,
    Rabbit.

Then gun forum over there is a bit different than the rest of the place. It’s even got different moderators than any of the other sections.

  8. Gregory Morris Says:

If it is a matter of bandwidth, just break their links. If the Brady Campaign hotlinked your images, I’d definitely replace the image with something amusing.

There are dozens of other tricky things you could do besides something as obvious as tubgirl… for instance, you could replace the image with something nearly identical, but that makes them look silly. You could also replace the images they link with a huge file (if you don’t care about your own bandwidth.)

You can also do some fun stuff with php… you can configure your webserver (via htaccess if you use apache) to parse those particular image files as php, then replace the jpg content with some fun php stuff that returns random images from flickr.

    The geeky possibilities are endless.

  9. Alcibiades McZombie Says:

Whoa, now, I surf with referrers off. If you implement this thing, I might view this negative picture.

You might be able to pass the image through some sort of “watermark script”.

  10. jed Says:

Other than serving them up disgusting images, another thing to do that might mess with them, depending upon how good their HTML/CSS is, would be to substitute a 1x3000px monocolor gif. Due to compression, it’ll be a very small file, but it might screw up the layout.

  11. Rustmeister Says:

    Jed, you scare me sometimes.

  12. Jim W Says:

The gungeon at DU is basically a nest of trolls.

  13. Jim W Says:

And yes, I support the monocolor gif thing. Test it out and let us know the results.

  14. Jim W Says:

Actually make it a 2 color flashing animated gif. We can has seizure tiem nao?

  15. Robb Allen Says:

Jed, heck, go with a 3000×3000 image of a single color. GIF wise, you’re still only looking at 4k.

I tried reading that ‘gun’ forum – made my brain hurt.

  18. yeppers Says:

technically no one is stealing your stuff since the link is posted. Stealing would be if they claimed it was their own- and they did not. They basically cited your website. When you publish something- your work becomes open to public view- which means public criticism and public use. Public use means that your website and images can be used by people for educational or recrational (as long as no money is being made off it) as long as they credit the information to you (a citation aka a link). This shows that you are the actually “owner” of the information.

but im just talking legalities- you have every right to be angry for any reason. If it is causing your bandwith problems you can ask them nicely to remove the link.

But in conclusion, if you don’t like your stuff being linked- don’t post it or make your site a private site.

so my suggestion is go ask them nicely to remove it and they will probably do what you ask…no reason to stoop to childish behavior

  19. yeppers Says:

“They hotlinked my picture but gave me a link” is the new “they wrote bad things about me but they spelled my name right.”

actually its called CITING, which you are allowed to do and alot of people do

  20. bossy22 Says:

ive contacted the moderators about removing your link if it is a bandwidth problem for you

if you are angry about the pictures i will remove those too, but i won’t apologize for using them- because i did not “steal” your pictures. All pictures in DU must have their link posted if they arent your own- this as Yeppers said is considered Citing- you can cite almost any thing that has been published- and putting something on a website is considered publishing for all important purposes. By citing them i never claimed them to be mine.

There was no disclaimer that was clearly visible on your website asking people not to use your images. If it was there and CLEARLY posted then i would apologize

In short, Yeppers is correct, if you don’t want your stuff being cited, don’t post it on a webpage that is open to the public- or put a disclaimer on it.

BTW- you could have also contacted DU administration if it was causing your problems- they would have removed the link right away. What i see you were talking about here is nothing more than childish.

so to conclude- i will remove your link if it is causing a problem with you- and your pictures but i will not apologize for USING them and properly CITING them.

Are they paying for my bandwidth or am I?

And, no, it’s not a bandwidth problem. I don’t really mind so much to be honest as it’s posted by a good guy.

  23. bossy22 Says:

So i will ask you this SayUncle…what it really bother you if i left it up?

  24. Linoge Says:

Agh. Rampant lack of punctuation and capitalization, and even worse spelling. I wonder where they came from?

So unless it was an image that I personally made, took, or altered, and the people linked to it without first asking me, or providing a link back to me associated with the image, I guess I would not really care. The bandwidth on my hosting account is positively absurd, so that would never break. However, if it did fall under the aforementioned category, and they did not attribute properly… oh, all bets are off baby.

well that would be considered intellectual stealing

Actually, not so much. I just found it rude, frankly.

  27. bossy22 Says:

well there was no mal-intention involved. As i said before, when you post it on the internet its like publishing- your information can be used by other people as long as it isnt for monitary gain without your permission. They generally do have to cite it and make sure that they inform their audience that it is actually your intellectual property.

if you don’t want it used put up a disclaimer on it, or make the web page private

if it were up to me id be more than glad if people used my material in a positive light as long as they credited it to me- it would show me that my messege was reaching more ears and that people actually cared what i thought

  30. Ravenwood Says:

Hasselhoff? Tubgirl is way more effective than that.

Hotlinking is stealing bandwidth, not the image itself. Even if the image is public domain (ie: the mona lisa or U.S. Constitution), they are still having you pay to host the image for them which is stealing.

Whether or not to resort to anti-theft measures like tubgirl is a personal decision. Here’s a better metaphor: If you own a store and a kid wants to hang a sign in your window for his lost dog, he should ask permission first. Even though you agree with the message, if he simply walked in and stuck his sign in your window you’d probably object.

I don’t think that is the correct metaphor because in this instance i was doing something which didn’t “need” permission….putting a sign up on a store requires the store owners permission- using another researchers data only requires a citation. I still hold that i didnt do anything wrong- it was for all important purposes published material and i did not see any disclaimer on the images or the site itself. I cited where i got the information and images from. I have offered to take it down if it really bothers sayuncle because it is not worth starting a fight over

  33. Regolith Says:

yeppers – you’re getting two different issues mixed up – copyright and bandwidth theft. The images aren’t original to SaysUncle.com, so this is not a case of copyright issues.

Bandwidth theft is when you directly link (i.e. hotlink or inline link) an image or file on someone else’s server so that it displays on a secondary/external website. What happens is that every time that image is viewed on an external site that is displaying the images (such as DU), the website that is hosting the file gets traffic(in this case, SayUncle). This results in the host server has to front the bandwidth needed to serve up the image. Because you have to PAY for the ammount of bandwidth your website uses, SayUncle gets to foot the bill instead of the site that is displaying the images.

Wikipedia has an article on it that probably explains it a bit better than I do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inline_linking

  34. straightarrow Says:

Ok, where is xrlqy now? He could call me a moron on this stuff and be correct. I don’t know what any of you said.

It’s tough being an analog man in a digital world.

  35. Sam Says:

Just change the image to something that says “please don’t hotlink without permission”
That way you can send a message without being rude.
frankly we need more pro-gun democrats, the last thing I would want to do is scare them off.

  36. SayUncle Says:

sorry about that bossy. for some reason my spam filter didn’t like your latest comments.

  37. bossy22 Says:

    sorry for posting multiples

Regolith thanks for the info- i didn’t know about that and i apologize if i have caused a problem, that was not my intention and i will take it off if it becomes a problem (or is).

  38. mike W. Says:

I’d say just ask them politely to stop hotlinking. Save the tubgirl for next time.

  39. Xrlq Says:

Tubgirl is for egregious “hotlinks” from enemies. Recursive-Hasselhoff and Kermit/bunny are better for situations like this one.

  40. Standard Mischief Says:

Let it slide or get all tub girl on them? What say you?

ahh, ye old hotlinking standard mischief revenge never gets old, does it?

I’d let it slide this time, though I could write a .htaccess script for you that would redirect all those DU people to Coral CDN

Something like this here, (scroll down to “Redirect by Referrer”), though it sounds like you are not worried too much by the bandwidth.

BTW, I’m firmly in the “hotlinking w/o permission is impolite, but not illegal” camp myself.

  41. SayUncle Says:

no problem bossy. but my spam filter seems to not like youl

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
