Update: more here.

I think she was a little over the top. She could have invited him in for iced tea and bored the hell out of him so he would never come back. This just gives the press every stereotype they might want.

  2. straightarrrow Says:

Armed Canadian has a good take on this. I don’t think the lady was over the top. She is elderly and prepared. At no time did she put the trespasser in danger while she determined if he was a danger to her.

  3. Rabbit Says:

Geez, most of the comments (at the first link) are straight out of DU’s PSH wing. I did notice that one of the earliest, most vociferous, was posted from a Maryland resident, so I guess there’s a dispensation given for pussies.

Myself, I don’t see a problem with an 800 meter KZ around my house. It’s a prerequisite anytime I was looking to buy rural property.

    Regards,
    Rabbit.

  4. Sigivald Says:

I wish I hadn’t clicked that CNN link.

Because I made the mistake of glancing at the comments, just like Rabbit did.

(Like “what kind of Secret Service do we have, where someone can be armed with a pistol within rifle range of the President?!?!” … well, probably one which respects private property as it should?

News flash, commenter – it’s not unlawful to be armed “near the President”.)

    Robert:

I answer the door with a pistol held behind my back as a matter of habit … the little old lady was doing the same sort of thing. The euro’tard reporter was unaware of the pistol until someone else showed him the photo.

This is prudent behavior, and not over the top.

The newsies PSH over an armed homeowner is over the top.

  6. Nylarthotep Says:

God the article itself comments moronically like the commenters:

As word spread that the lady had a gun – which she did not use – I can tell you it’s a severe understatement to say White House and Secret Service officials were a bit concerned about the fact that they had just dodged an international incident.

You don’t honestly believe that the Secret Service didn’t know she had a gun do you? It’s their job to know everything about everyone resident to the area. I recall when GHWBush was president and had his house in Maine secured. They had control over the lobster men that were fishing off his property.

The thing to note is exactly as Sigivald states, it isn’t illegal to have a gun near the president.

  7. Cactus Jack Says:

That woman was perfectly justified in doing what she did. She had no way of knowing what that fool was up to, he could’ve been fixing to break in for all she knew. She played it safe.

  8. nk Says:

I tend to lean towards the “crazy old woman with a gun” view. The Public Guardian should look into a conservatorship for her.

Well of course you do. How badly were you scared when you read the story?

  10. nk Says:

Well, I’ll tell you, straightarrow. Old women who think they’re John Wayne, gun or no gun, might find that their only natural right is the right to re-enter the food chain. As long as they don’t take anyone else with them or cause him to be sent to prison because he defended himself with his own firearm against a crazy old woman defending her lawn.

And I don’t believe that “the police come too late” in Crawford, Texas. Not even to prevent some stranger leaving foot prints on your lawn. If she was really afraid of the stranger, she should have picked up her gun first, her phone second, and made sure her doors and windows were locked in-between.

  11. nk Says:

The fact of the matter, sir, is that there are a lot of people out there who don’t need the government’s permission to carry a gun. Or “castle doctrine” to kill you. Your best defense is your common sense. Of which this lady exercised none.

  12. SayUncle Says:

Of which this lady exercised none.

I disagree. elderly lady sees stranger on property. Perfectly appropriate to be armed while investigating that.

  13. nk Says:

Shouldn’t have investigated. Made sure she was armed, made herself a cup of tea, and made the police earn her tax dollars.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
