Yeah, sadly that is so, if you look at the makeup of the senate and the committee. As I said, I’m not sure that if we defeated Sullivan, it would take the heat off Red’s Trading Post, and other dealers. I think you either need a very serious reformer, who’s willing to stick his neck out fighting the ATF bureaucracy, which you’re not going to get out of Bush, or you need an Act of Congress.
Bush’s political capital is spent. Even if he had any left to ram through a controversial nominee, he wouldn’t spend it on ATF; we’d get more of the same. Congress has more promise for relief, but it’s going to be tough to get anything through. I think we need to try to get something out of Congress though. I don’t want to be mistaken as believing that I’m giving up on ATF reform, just that I think doing it through defeating Sullivan is more charging the machine gun nest rather than a a flanking maneuver.
