Truly Awful Songs

1 We Built This City – Starship. Awful on every level. Dumb lyrics and the music sucks. Seriously, a group of musicians got together and this was the result?

2 Hero Some whiny bitch err Enrique Iglesias. Seriously, I’ve heard this song twice. Once at the bank. It’s awful. It’s a whine fest and makes me want to choke random people or gouge out my own ears. Make it stop.

3 Warrior – Patty Smyth: lyrics:

Shooting at the walls of heartache
Bang, bang!
I am the warrior

’nuff said.

4 – I wanna sex you upsome more whiny bitches err Color Me Badd. Not only is it awful but the title makes no sense.

5 – Anything by Rob Zombie. Oh, look. Two chords over and over again. Just like the last song.

Rob’s White Zombie days actually included some pretty nifty guitar work, that J. Yuenger guy or whatever…

Ignoring the obvious Macarena/Spice Girls/Pop-Tart-Du-Jour I would enthusiastically add Foreigner – Cold As Ice to that list. And pretty much anything by Air Supply.

  3. HerrBGone Says:

How about Tom Petty and the Fart Breakers? Just about every song sounds the same.

    Note-note-note-note-note-lower noooooote
    Note-note-note-note-note-lower noooooote
    Note-note-note-note-note-lower noooooote
    Note-note-note-note-note-lower-and-lower noooooote
    A couple of chord changes
Next verse – sounds like the first

    Worst….. record….. ever!

Umm, the Warrior Rocks. Clearly you were not a teenage girl nor did you know any growing up.

Worst ever, “We saved this City”.

    Narcissism on crack.

“We saved this City”=“We Built This City”

Starship induced brainfart. Had a flashback.

Add anything made by the barf inducing Bee Gees to that list. BTW, with few exceptions Foreigner is pretty good. Hell, everyone gets a flop or 2.

Just listening to music by people like Fergie makes me hear the death knell of good music. I won’t even get started about how her lyrics for “London Bridge” make me want to shoot myself. Shudder.

  11. jed Says:

Anything by Tracy Chapman. I’d rather listen to a herd of sheep than that bleating moonbat.

Sometimes, lyrics which, when taken by themselves, come out really stoopid aren’t so bad in the context of a good performance with a decent melody, etc. However, “Any way you want it, that’s the way you need it” does not fall into that category.

HerrBGone, I think you’re being too hard on Petty.

Forgot to mention that I didn’t know that Patti Smyth did that warrior thing. Never heard it by anyone other than Scandal, and really, it didn’t totally suck.

Speaking of Patti Smyth, her cover of “Because the Night” just blows away The Boss.

  13. mike hollihan Says:

Jed, you’re confusing two people here. Patti Smith (note the spelling) did the “Because the Night” cover and was loosely part of the New York punk scene in the Seventies. Had a kick-ass band featuring Lenny Kaye on guitar. (He of the “Nuggets” records.) Tall, skinny, gangly, scary. Later married Fred “Sonic” Smith.

Patty Smyth was in a band called Scandal (or should that be Scandyl? Ha! I kyll myself.) She went solo and then had the hit “The Warrior.” Tiny little “tuff” singer of the New Wave movement. (remember that Crystal Bernard, Pat Benatar look?)

Yeah, I know way too much about that era of music.

[…] Really, I was just doing a spell check, in order to not make a second cultural faux-pas over at Uncle’s post on really bad songs. […]

  15. jed Says:

    Well, learn something new everyday.

Really, ever since some pop psychologist decided that dysfunctional was a proper spelling, the whole i/y thing has faded. I mean, “dis”-functional wasn’t good enough? 🙂 If my Fantom vaccum quits working, maybe it’ll be dysfunctional.

How could I forget Pat Benatar? Or the Runaways? Yeah, I remember hair bands. River Tam would have totally freaked out.

  16. KF Raizor Says:

Did you ever see the VH-1 Behind the Music on Jefferson Airplane/Starship? Paul Kantner had a WONDERFUL comment about “We Built This City.” He mumbled something about, “Yeah, we built this” and flipped the bird.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
