Quote of the day

From The Skinny on CBS News:

I love my AK-47! All responsible, freedom-loving American families should have one.

Well, I’m biased against the commie guns myself but still. NinthStage notes:

See, with this new internet media, they are listening to us. Pre-internet, no wireless media would acknowledge readers opinions like this, except maybe as a single “representative” “letter to the editor” one day a week. They are now paying attention which means we should keep doing the same.

The graphic accompanying the piece displays observance of rule 3. We’re making progress!

    An AK in every home?
Not if you want to hit anything. Oh it will shoot every time you pull the trigger, and it has a very effective cartridge. But…it’s commie sheet metal. I know, I’m predjudiced against it and it is a proven weapon. Isn’t there something else we can come up with that works and is not a Che Guevera medallion?

I doubt an AK could take the eye out of a gnat at 1000 paces, but then, I’ve never been too worried about being endangered by a gnat.

Putting 30 rounds into a human torso at 200 yards? Yeah that it can do. All day. At least until the handguards melt or catch on fire.

BTW Uncle, didn’t you build an AK?

Partially. The federales took it when they busted my buddy.

The gentleman misspelled “Garand,” but everyone’s entitled to an honest mistake now and then (and no, my responsible, freedom-loving family doesn’t have one yet). 😉

In the urban warfare that most Americans will be experiencing when the rest of the world recognizes the fundamental worthlessness of our fiat currency, ranges will be short and the environment will be target rich. The “semi-automatic assault weapon” is our best possible choice for this scenario. Those concerned about shooting through their neighbors’ walls might prefer an M4gery. On the other hand, AKs and their ammo are available at half the cost, and some of us might want to shoot through a neighbor’s wall.

  7. Sebastian Says:

Ah yes, even though the rest of the world is on fiat currency as well. But I suppose we could go back to gold. But what gives gold any real value? Uranium is scarce too, but no one suggests we go to a uranium standard. The only reason gold has any value is because people think it has value. Same reason for fiat currency.

  8. Sebastian Says:

The Kalashnikov isn’t a precision rifle by anyone’s definition, but it’s plenty accurate in the hands of a competent shooter. It’s reputation for inaccuracy is largely undeserved. Assuming you have a rifle that’s been manufactured properly (which is a problem with some of the cheap AK knockoffs), there’s no fundamental reason you ought not to be able to hit a man sized target out to several hundred meters consistently.

  9. Ron W Says:

I oppose commies on every point, except that Kalishnakov came up with an excellent and simple design for a reliable self-defense rifle which is “affordable” as the leftists here like to say. But then they want to greatly restrict or deny the “affordable” means of self-defense to the people…just like their commie comrades.

I’m happy with my Russian AK and I just augmented my ammo supply for it this weekend with a purchase of some Russian-made 7.62×39 “affordable” ammo.

Yes, the rest of the world’s governments issue fiat currencies, but none is creating new Monopoly money out of thin air at the prodigious rate that our government is. And you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Just wait until the Baby Boomers begin demanding more retirement benefits.

Also, we don’t produce anything any more. We import the bulk of our manufactured goods and energy.

In case you haven’t noticed, the U.S. dollar is already worth less than the Canadian dollar. In the near future, the U.S. dollar will be trading one for one against the Zimbabwean dollar.

I am too, I prefer American rifles. But I’ve played with the AK47, AK74, and RPK machine gun when I was in the National Guard and, IMHO, they’re damn good weapons, solid and dependable. They aint pretty but they can take abuse and neglect that would disable a M16/M4 and M60 and still put rounds downrange.

I have a Bushmaster XM15-E2S that I love but I would have no problem with owning/using a semi-auto AK varient either.

“Isn’t there something else we can come up with that works and is not a Che Guevera medallion?”

Despite its origins the AK is one of the most democratic weapons ever made. It is dirt cheap, reliable under the worst conditions, and an illiterate twelve year old could be taught to use it effectively in about fifteen minutes. The fact that the politics and actions of many perhaps most of the resistance fighters that have used it up to this point have been nefarious doesn’t change that.
Whatever anyone believes its shortcomings are, it would fit in perfectly with a modern version of the founding fathers vision of a militia.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
