Retaliation

So, I read that the Chinese military hacked into the Pentagon. Wow. Ballsy. I wonder what our response will be? How do you respond to cyber attacks? Cyber diplomacy?

I wonder what our response will be?

Probably buying more Chinese stuff at WallyWorld.

  2. Les Jones Says:

I imagine we’re been hacking into their systems as well.

  3. Les Jones Says:

    We’ve.

  4. Linoge Says:

Hack the Chinese government’s main page and replace it with “PWNED!”?

    Barring that… get better security?

  5. Brutal Hugger Says:

I imagine such attacks will be a normal tool of warfare, but to do it in peacetime seems rather provocative to me. We can probably expect some international treaty where countries agree not to do it. But since it’s hard to prove the source of such an attack, all sides will probably have to live with things as they are.

There’s some value in countries/militaries generally having less than absolute secrecy. Perfect secrecy gives us things like Abu Ghraib. On the inside of this soda bottle I happen to be drinking is a quote: “Character’s doing the right thing when no one is looking.” If we have perfect secrecy, nobody is ever looking, and I just don’t think militaries have that much character.

    Our government will probably apologize…

  7. Adam Lawson Says:

Easy. We hack THEIR government computers and replace all their desktops with that horrid goatse picture.

  8. Geek Says:

Probably nothing much different than when it happened before.

  9. Joe Huffman Says:

Of course there is another possible response:

the United States arranged for the Soviets to receive intentionally flawed process control software for use in conjunction with the USSR’s natural gas pipelines. Reed stated that “The pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines, and values was programmed to go haywire, after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds.”

Siberian explosion in 1982, an explosion that was said to have been the “most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space.”

Order Chinese takeout, then don’t tip the delivery boy.

I wonder if the government is running any honeypots. (I would hope so, if security is actually doing their job.)

Considering whose computer he got into, and where he worked, I doubt they got anything valuable. This is part of the FedGov – unlikely he had access to anything of value. The drones know the important stuff.

As for our response, mheh – what did we do when they kidnapped our plane & pilots?

  12. Manish Says:

So what do y’all think we should do? Start a nuclear war? Tell the Chinese to stop making crap that gets onto WalMarts shelves? Tell China to stop purchasing our federal and homeowner debt?

How about a “double secret probation” cold war?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
