Obligatory Gun Post

Although it’s not the kind I wanted to do. If you’re going to have guns, for the love of Pete, keep ’em away from your kids!

Here’s hoping the kid makes a full recovery.

Battle down the hatches, man the battle stations…he’s a LIBERAL!!! Red Alert, DefCon 5…

What’s up TG? Smooth segue on the gun post.

  2. tgirsch Says:

I know, I know, it’s going to take weeks to get the smell out of this blog…

  3. Lyle Says:

Don’t leave small kids alone at 10:00PM within reach of your medicine cabinet and steak knives either.

Both of my kids have been hurt riding bicycles. Neither has been so much as scratched with a gun.

Statistically, many times more kids drown in 5-gallon buckets, and in bathtubs, than are accidentally shot, but we don’t hear near as many reports on those incidents– there’s no agenda to ban buckets, bathtubs or bicycles.

And there is an agenda in this story:
    “…violence caused by illegal guns…”

Right: The gun did it, and by extension, all you gun owners are responsible, along with makers, the dealers, and the NRA.

But someone dumb enough to be a convicted felon is more likely dumb enough to leave small kids alone at 10:00 PM with a loaded gun. Who does the Mayor want to punish for that? All gun owners, exactly as if a black person had done something wrong, and in response the mayor called for doing something about “violence caused by black people”. Same story, different target group. The radical feminist movement might see this as “violence caused by men” and no doubt they do. It just depends on the object of your irrational hatred on a given day. For other people, it’s the Jews.

For myself, I keep my loaded gun on my person, where no one can get to it without my having something to say about it. Plus my kids have been educated on proper gun handling (and proper use of medicines, bleach, knives, and insect sprays, and they know how to swim). The other guns in the house, including the ones my son keeps in his room, they would have to load first.

Now there’s an interesting premise for a story: How many cases have you seen reported in which a kid was hurt because a gun was unloaded adn un available for quick response?

    Hmmm?

Do you think there have been no such cases?

While you’re pondering that question, I’ll tell you of my toddler-age niece, who was murdered in her own home, after her mother (my sister) was knifed to death by an intruder. The little girl was strangled using a shoestring.

They had no guns in the house you see.

Did that make the national news? Why would it? There’s nothing there that would further anyone’s agenda (now one at the time was trying to ban knives or shoestring).

  4. Kevin Baker Says:

    Uh, from the story:

According to police, the adults in the house fled with the exception of the 32-year-old man, who was arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and leaving a loaded firearm within the reach of a child.

    —

The mother of the 6-year-old who was shot baby sits for the 3-year-old. She claimed she was out for a walk at the time of the shooting, police said.

    So, we have

    1) “Adults” who “fled” the scene

    2) A “felon in possession”

    and

    3) The babymomma was “out for a walk” at ten at night leaving a three year-old and a six year-old apparently alone, and not in bed asleep.

But you seem to find it necessary to ask us to be responsible?

Tgirsch, this happens far too often around the country, but it’s still remarkably rare. (“Once” is too often.) This is much like concealed-carry – the overwhelming majority of gun owners are responsible. Some, as in this case, obviously wouldn’t be no matter what the laws were. And, sometimes, shit happens.

  5. Sailorcurt Says:

Tgirsch, this happens far too often around the country,

And the vast majority of cases involve geniuses like the actors in this little melodrama: Criminals, druggies, unfit parents who’s kids are endangered by having the horrible luck to have been born into a family of idiots…not by the particular piece of hardware that became the vehicle of their demise.

The nimrod stored his (illegal) firearm behind the STOVE? Too bad the toddler didn’t shoot him in the nuts and remove any possibility of his further pollution of the gene pool.

But the story here isn’t the children being endangered through obvious neglect, the story isn’t the children being endangered by the felon illegally in possession of a firearm, the story is:

“We are talking about children here; children who are in very real, very immediate danger because of illegal guns.”

’cause, you know, it’s always the inanimate object’s fault…and if we’d just pass one more “sensible gun law”, this wouldn’t have been able to happen.

And to top it all off, tgirsch has the gall to insinuate that all gun owners are as completely and utterly moronic and incompetent as the people in this story.

    Give me a a break.

  6. straightarrow Says:

tgirsch is not really a liberal or an anti-gun agent or a rights depriver. He is just silly.

  7. Lyle Says:

I’m not piling on tgirsch. I’ll pile on the bigoted MSM, and on the shlubs with which they ascosiate. I’m glad for the post, it was first of many peices I found on the matter.

And parents, of course, keep an eye on your kids (but you instinctively do that anyway. If your head is together, your kids are the most important thing in yur lives. I want mine to grow up and live in a free sociaty, for example).

  8. tgirsch Says:

If there was an anti-gun point in my post, I surely missed it. I didn’t blame the gun. I didn’t call for new laws. I didn’t ask anyone to ban anyone. And I thought I was clear that the blame went to the “adults” in the situation, but maybe not. Calm down, people, the black helicopters haven’t even fueled up yet. đŸ™‚

(Yeah, the mayor tried to score his points at the end of the linked story, but I didn’t endorse that.)

  9. Sailorcurt Says:

Sorry if I misunderstood. You made a blanket statement that responsible gun owners already know and linked to a story where the city mayor blatantly blamed the gun for the stupidity of the owner. It made me feel a bit defensive.

When someone does something stupid…say…using a chainsaw to cut down the branch that their ladder is leaning against…it’s perfectly acceptable to ridicule their actions; most of us, however, don’t need to be reminded not to do that. I took it as insulting that you felt the need to exhort me not to do something blatantly irresponsible as if you fear that I may be in danger of making the same mistake.

Then the mayor’s line in the story linked just flat out made me see red.

If that’s not the way you intended the post to come out, I apologize for taking it personally.

  10. tgirsch Says:

That’s why I used a category heading of “teh st00pid.”

I expect that if the same story had been linked by Uncle with the same text, it would have elicited quite a different reaction. But apology accepted. đŸ™‚

  11. straightarrow Says:

In light of my misinterpretation of your post, I too must apologize. Sorry for the snide remark. I was already in a bad place and perhaps was in combat mode. I sure like this keyboard combat better than the other kind. My apologies.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
