Apologies

The Roanoke Times, on their brilliant idea to post the names and addresses of people who have concealed carry permits:

Oops. We screwed the pooch. Sorry about that. Please buy our paper again

Though many of our critics believe that the database handed burglars a shopping list of households with guns and abusers a list of their victims, no one can point to a single incident where similar publications led to a crime.

What complete idiots. Little wonder newspapers are declining.

The potential for harm is something we should have given far greater thought to in making the decision.

Professional journalism used to have standards.

We also regret that there was not a more compelling public purpose — beyond illustrating how the Freedom of Information Act works — behind the decision to post the database.

Quite simply, the purpose behind posting the information was to injure those that Christian Trejbal disagrees with. They insult us by saying they’re showing us how the FIA works, I think most know and there are far better ways (and more productive ways) to illustrate it.

Did I miss the link on that page to leave comments? Maybe they’ve had their fill of unedited(read:not controlled by the editorial board) comments.

Well, either they have had their heads buried in the sand or they just did not care. The publication of such lists has happened in other states as well, with similar outcries.

In fact most all of those other publications that have pulled this stunt have said they did it (when first published) for the same reason, it’s public so we published it.

Most of them also come up with the same lame excuse when called out about it; they did it to make sure people who should not have them don’t actually have them. Yet none of the reports actually tried to prove that (I have not seen an article that has tried to do it). They simply went the easy route and published all the names.

The good news for most of those states that have had their lists published, the state has since removed them from public view. Hopefully this stupidity by RT will cause Virginia to modify the law and make their list private too.

“Oh, Sorry! Didn’t mean to hit you in the head with that hammer…or the guy after you….or the guy after you… or the guy…”

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
