This again

Looks like my home county mayor wants to enact a wheel tax. If we pass it, it’s free money, he says. I think Jerry Cunningham needs a class on economics.

We go through this every few years. As with most things government, it’s not the revenue side that’s a problem. It’s the spending.

More from R. Neal here.

A wheel tax? Something about that sounds so….. prehistoric.

I’m sure not long after the invention of the wheel, there were caveman tribal leaders figuring out whether they could tax it. I mean, after all, it was putting the skid makers out of business.

Shelby county enacted a “temporary” wheel tax over 10 years ago.

Not only is it still here, it’s been doubled. (h/t Half Bakered)

What happened to the good old days of tarring and feathering?

You ever watch Robin Williams movie “Popeye”?

The Tax Man: Yeah. You’re new in town right?
Popeye: If you call this a town, yes.
The Tax Man: Well, first of all, there’s 17¢ new-in-town tax, and there’s 45¢ rowboat-under-the-wharf tax, and one dollar leaving-your-junk-lying-around-the-wharf tax, so all together, you owe the Commodore $1.87.
    Popeye: Uh, who’s this Commodore?
The Tax Man: Is that the nature of question? There’s a nickel question tax.

Hey, Rustmeister beat me to my own punch! 😉

Former Shelby County Mayor Bill Morris pushed for a $25 wheel tax as a temporary measure, “for the kids.” The money was to be specifically earmarked for County schools, which were having budget shortfalls.

Of course, the budget shortfalls continue. The wheel tax *was* doubled and is still being collected. The money now goes into the general fund and some of it goes to schools.

And they renamed the Nonconnah Parkway the Bill Morris Parkway just to rub salt into the wound.

Do not fall for it, y’all.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
