It’s a beautiful little gun but the cartridge is … I’m too nice to say it. The 7.62×39 is where it should have gone to (SKS, AK) and the venerable .32-20 is not bad at all. I have read that the .32 Magnum is a modernized .32-20. Basically, if you like intermediate .30 calibers, the Mini-30 has the M1 Carbine beat all ways from Sunday. (I am not affiliated in any way with Sturm Ruger.)

I got mine through a deal where some private investors had bought up a bunch of used Israeli M1 Carbines, to sell here. The US had gifted large stocks of M1s to Israel following Korea, so these were carbines that had been through extended garrison duty in Israel after being used in Korea after being used in WWII. They tried to sell ’em here, but the ATF decided that, even though they were well-documented and all made in the US, we couldn’t have ’em be sold just to the RABBLE! Unthinkable! Don’t you realize these were evil *assault weapons*?!?

ATF finally worked out a deal with them to sell them only to sworn police officers. Think about how that cut into the market for these investors! They had to sell them at cut rate prices. My father organized a buy in which we all got a reduced rate for buying in lots of 30 or more. I bought mine for $158, sight unseen, luck of the draw. Fortunately, mine cleaned up pretty nicely– it was made by GM’s brake parts division in 1943. Dad’s was made about the same time by Winchester.

Is it OK if I’m NOT excited?

There are all manner of other guns more worth my money. If I had a heaping pile, I suppose I’d get one, just for the hell of it.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
