Haslam and guns – another view

Late for Dinner says good for Haslam:

To his credit, Haslam would not back down. He said he doesn’t understand why anyone would not want illegal guns off the street, and invited Gill down to the KPD evidence room to see what they were talking about. Good for Mayor Haslam.

As I said there:

The issue isn’t that he wants to target illegal guns (most politicos do and its not a bad thing). The issue is that he has allied himself with an organization that is clearly anti-gun and has targeted lawful gun dealers.

The mission statement of Mayors Against Illegal Guns tells you all you need to know.

Our only interest is in fighting crime — and we are determined to win. The polarizing rhetoric of gun politics on all sides only obscures the tragic reality we see every day on our streets: violent criminals with easy access to firearms.

Even our more liberal friends can understand what is meant by “easy access to firearms”. It means for those of you in downtown Knoxville on the sixth floor that the intent is to make it very difficult to have access to purchase firearms.

Late for Dinner is way off on this one. Mayor Haslam will wear this around his neck during the next election.

Why is this issue always about all one way or all the other?

  3. SayUncle Says:

I don’t think that’s the case at all, particularly in this instance.

  4. Rustmeister Says:

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is pretending to be a “common sense” group when they are really out for gun control. They support about every gun control measure in the works today.

    Say Uncle-

Why do you link to R. Neal?

He calls Steve Gill an uber-wingnut, like he himself is middle of the road.

Note that he refers to Insty as a gunblog (like it’s some kind of bad thing).

He’s the main reason I don’t read Knoxviews, watch the alphabet news, read NYT, etc.

I just can’t read a bunch of anti-gun, socialist blather.

  6. Marc Says:

“I just can’t read a bunch of anti-gun, socialist blather.” Then how do you know what the “other side” is up to.

Uh, sure. That’s why you care about who he’s allying himself with instead of what he’s trying to accomplish. That’s why commenter “chris” said, well, everything he said.

With very few exceptions, both sides seem to be unable to compromise, and even when a side makes a moderate move, it’s attacked. It’s silly.

  8. Matt Says:

Actually, all you need to know about the Mayors group is that they are funded by the anti-gun Joyce Foundation.

  9. SayUncle Says:

I care who he’s allying himself with because, er, they’re an anti-gun group. Their intent is far from moderate. See here.

  10. R. Neal Says:

Anonymous Chris, R. Neal is a gun owner, 2nd Amendment supporter, and one-time shooting enthusiast (before moving on to more interesting pursuits, to me anyway, not that there’s anything wrong with gun enthusiasts or their hobbies/interests).

    Just for the record.

But thanks for not reading. Seriously. You are clearly not our target audience. There are plenty of other more compatible blogs for you to read and comment on that will be far more to your liking.

And mainly I just wanted an excuse to write that paragraph about Bloomberg’s SWAT squads and Hillary’s secret gun registry. But I understand that not everyone has a sense of humor. It’s a sign of intelligence, you know.

Why is this issue always about all one way or all the other?

Well, you see the second amendment to the constitution is all one way. “….shall not be infringed.” Doesn’t leave any room for negotiating a compromise of right. A compromise of principal is a violation of principle. Where principle is not at risk, compromise can be a means of moving all to a better place. But when principle is compromised, it is simply wrong, 100%.

Look at it like this, l don’t have all the money I want. You work hard for yours. You don’t want me to rob you of your money. But I deem it more common sense if we compromise and we agree for me just to rob you a little bit. There, don’t you feel better now knowing you have bowed to good sense and good faith and compromised. Of course, once I know you won’t defend your principle absolutely, I’ll be back to compromise some more in a little bit.

  12. chris Says:

“R. Neal is” – You speak in the third person about yourself, like Bob Dole.

“But I understand that not everyone has a sense of humor. It’s a sign of intelligence, you know. ” – Yes, R., your wit and intellect certainly jump off the page.

    Kumbayah, dude.

  13. R. Neal Says:

Anonymouse Chris: Jump off R. Neal’s page, “dude”. Oh wait, you already did. Heh.

  14. countertop Says:

If only Countertop could jump off R. Neal’s page and land squarely back in SouthKnoxBubbas universe of respectful (somewhat) debate

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
