Funeral funnies

Another in a series of jokes that don’t work well when written

Aunt B. relays a laugh she had at a funeral. Here’s one from my life. A few years back, my great uncle Paul passed away. The funeral was a somber event, of course. And me and the other elder cousins were pallbearers.

My eldest cousin, saddened, looks at mean says: Why do they call us pallbearers?

I say: ‘Cause we’re carrying Paul

We had a good chuckle. Paul would have approved.

At my step-mother’s funeral, My Love’s cell phone went off – and she couldn’t find it to shut it off. She was embarrassed beyond words.

At her funeral, my sister’s cell phone went off – same thing; she couldn’t get the zipper on her purse open. I didn’t know someone could turn purple from shame. She said later she wanted to climb in the casket in order to hide. 🙂

My friends and I are respectful in the funeral parlor, but take hourly breaks to the parking lot to drink from coolers in the trunks and truck-beds. With the non-smoking laws now, we take more frequent breaks. Sometimes there have been more people in the parking lot passing a bottle than in the parlor paying their respects.

    We don’t have a drinking problem – we drink; it’s not a problem. 🙂

I was a pallbearer at my wife’s grandfather’s funeral last January. We had to carry the coffin from the hearse, up the stairs of the church, just into the entryway of the church, where we put the coffin on a cart to be rolled up to the front of the church. As we were setting the coffin down, I looked at my wife’s sister-in-law (who was standing close by), and under my breath, in my best old man voice, I said:

“I don’t want to go on the caaart!”

She almost lost it, which made me almost lose it. Breaking into a fit of laughter at a funeral is considered bad form. I’m glad I was able to retain my composure.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
