At this point, I wonder if talking up Gonzales is a distraction from who will be the real nominee. At least, I fucking hope so.

Gonzales’ rationalizations for torture are offensive in several ways, but the worst may be his standard for pain. He wrote that interrogation procedures are only torture if they inflict pain equivalent to “organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death.” In fact, lethal injuries and injuries to organs are normally accompanied by a flood of natural pain-killers, so his standard is nonsensical.
It’s not his ignorance of biology that bothers me so much as the fact that his research into the matter was too shallow, his thinking too superficial, and his humility insufficient to make him feel like he should consult someone like a doctor who might know more than he.
I would much rather have a justice who thinks things through and arrives at conclusions that repulse me than one who just makes shit up to match his preconceptions. He lacks the intellectual competency and honesty to sit in judgment.
