Canada’s pending dog ban

The Toronto Humane society has issued a statement about the pending pit bull ban up north:

The Bill not only bans Pit bulls, it is a smoke screen that will lead to the deaths of thousands of innocent dogs of various breeds, in addition to Pit bulls.

– Bill 132 is ignorant. It fails to punish the animal abuse that leads to bites. The cycle of mistreatment and resulting bites will be perpetuated through the abuse of other breeds.

– Bill 132 is sneaky. It is a sleight-of-hand attack on all pet owners. It manipulates public sentiment to impose unnecessary and severe measures against all dog breeds.

– Bill 132 is cruel. Seized dogs can be sent to research laboratories to be subjected to any and all painful experiments.

– Bill 132 is hypocritical. It provides for the shipment of Pit bulls to other provinces. If the McGuinty government believes its own skewed rhetoric and thinks Pit bulls are “lethal weapons” as Michael Bryant stated, would it provide for the sending of dogs to other Canadians?

Under Bill 132, irresponsible owners can still acquire dog after dog and abuse them over and over. Instead, responsible pet owners are targeted and good dogs will be killed as a result.

The final insult of Bill 132 is to circumvent The Toronto Humane Society’s years of experience protecting animals and people alike.

Indeed.
