A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver’s trigger.
Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.
Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn’t find them a home, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies — one in his arms and another in his left hand — when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff’s report said.
Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford’s home, said sheriff’s Sgt. Ted Roy.
If you can’t care for pups, have your dog fixed.

The only thing I found interesting about this was that he was being charged with animal cruelty.
Is it illegal to put down a dog by shooting it? Or just illegal to put down a dog at all without some sort of license?

I have no idea. Dogs are property, technically. So I dunno if the charge will stick. this guy gives a bad name to dog owners.

I remember a case recently where a judge ruled that shooting a couple of cats with a shotgun was not considered animal cruelty because they did not suffer. They considered it a quick and humane death. However, the man was charged with destruction of property (they were not his cats).

This incident belongs in Kim du Toit’s department of righteous shootings. Too bad three of the puppies died, and Bradford didn’t.

this was the type of case that was referring to before.
it is your property, why can’t you shoot your own dogs? I can see why you can’t do it inside of a town, but what about in the middle of your own land out in the middle of know where.
I agree with say uncle that they best thing to do would be to get your dog fixed, but if a man can’t shoot his own dog, what next?

Who says only people have a right to self-defense? Let’s hear it for the hero pooch who saved himself and three of his litter mates. Sadly, three of the puppies died before the hero could intervene. Sadder still, Jerry Allen Bradford didn’t.
