Like you and me, only better

President Bush signed the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act into law. The law exempts active and retired police officers from local prohibitions regarding carrying firearms. Qualified policemen can carry weapons nationwide.

That’s a good thing, don’t get me wrong. However, I’d like to see national concealed carry for everyone.

Hmmm. I may have to join up as a local auxilliary cop then…

  2. tgirsch Says:

How about national concealed carry for everyone with training comparable to what a qualified policeman would have?

    Yeah, i’ll probably get deputized.

and i’m all for training but cops don’t undergo this magical transformation to learn to shoot. My dad is a local prominent law enforcement official. I went up there one day when they were doing one of those shoot/don’t shoot video drills with the cool little air powered glock. I scored higher than all his deputies.

as I’ve said before – its a second term issue. Politically, it would never go over in the first term. Its something I have talked to folks about and they all agreed its a good second term idea (remember, they tend to be from Texas)

For that matter – if Bush wins, also look for the prohibition on firearms in the National Parks to also be lifted (thats an administrative prohibition, not by statute, and is pretty easy to do away with). Actualy, that has more of a chance because its entirly up to the President, Congress doesn’t have much say (short of passing new legislation)

What I want to know is why the federal government is mucking about in local regulation. Surely cities and states can decide for themselves whether they want off-duty police carrying their guns. Perhaps even individual police departments can make these decisions based on the actual needs of their communities. This isn’t an issue that requires national or inter-state coordination.

The federal government should have no position on this issue.

I don’t want a national firearm law. Any process that gives CA input on the requirements to carry in PA can only result in making it hard for people in PA to get a permit.

The federal government should have no position on many issues.

I’ve rarely seen a law enforcement field-grade person who could hit a bull in the butt with a bass violyn.
That said this is a BAD, BAD law. Hell, they rule us while being exempt from the laws they enforce NOW.

This is most definitely not a good thing–can’t you recognize divide-and-conquer when you see it?
