Whither Edwards?

It appears that John Edwards is finally going to throw in the towel. Now the buzz I hear is that he might be considered for the VP slot. I wonder what you, the reader, think about the chances of that. Also, can anyone remember when was the last time that this happened—that one of the primary candidates was chosen as VP? I want to say it was the original Reagan/Bush ticket in 1980.

Some additional topics:
– Pros and Cons of Edwards as the VP choice.
– If not Edwards, then who?
– Hillary!

    Yahoo says we’ll know Wednesday.

Yeah, when Reagan chose Bush in 1980 that was the last time a candidate chose his opponent AFAIK.

I’m not sure what Edwards would bring to the ticket. If he’s just a Southern, slightly protectionist Kerry, does he really add any compelling reasons to vote for the ticket?

Kerry’s got the “anybody-but-Bush” crowd locked up. Figure that’s 30 percent of the electorate. His big task now is to appeal to moderate voters and duck the liberal label. I’m not sure Edwards helps on either score.

A better match is probably somebody with a strong military background, Mid East experience and solid moderate cred (but please not Clark). It would help if that person was a dynamic campaigner and had access to a fundraising network. What I’ve just described sounds a little like Joe Lierberman with personality.

And forget Hillary Clinton. She’s pledged several times to finish her Senate term. Plus she’s still a very polarizing figure.

Anyway, that’s a lot of words that add up to “I don’t know who the VP will be.”

I read that as saying the search process begins today.

Some people are suggesting Bob Graham or Richard Gephardt. I think either would round out a powerful anti-insomniac ticket.

Forget all that stuff – here’s the real question: When’s the last time a both the President and VP ticket had the same first names?

But seriously, everytime I hear that I cringe. I blogged about it yesterday, too….

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
