AWB Update

The Assault Weapons Ban has picked up three GOP supporters.

Getting the 1994 assault weapons prohibition renewed has been a Democratic priority this year. They picked up support Tuesday from GOP Sens. John Warner of Virginia, Mike DeWine of Ohio and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island.

“Although I voted against the ban a decade ago, over the past 10 years it has reduced crime dramatically and has made our streets safer,” Warner said. “The legislation also has protected the rights of gun owners better than many of us predicted.”

No, it hasn’t and no it hasn’t.

Update: Cool quote: From the 1999 Justice Department report on the effectiveness of the ban: “Given the limited use of the banned guns and magazines in gun crimes, even the maximum theoretically achievable preventive effect of the ban on outcomes such as the gun murder rate is almost certainly too small to detect statistically…”

AWB Update

I just spoke with the people who answer the phones for Bill Frist and Lamar Alexander. They stated that they were unaware that the Assault Weapons Ban would be attached to the frivolous lawsuit bill. That means not enough of you are calling.

Done. I told each aide (I guess they were aides)that I would like the Senator to pass the bill with no amendments, and barring that, with no amendments renewing the Clinton ban.

One of my Senators is a Republican. The young man who answered the phone in her office said, in essence, “Ok, I’ll pass that along.”

The other Senator is a Democrat. His aide started asking me what kind of firearms I thought ought to be banned, and should bans be based on lethality or the kind of ammunition or what.

I told him that the Clinton ban is a bad law because it bans firearms based only on their appearance, and not on their lethal capabilities. I also mentioned that I believe the 2nd amendment protects a right to the same arms an infantryman might carry. That probably caused him to write me off as a crackpot. So be it. This particular Senator doesn’t show up for many votes anyway.

Usually the people who answer the phones are interns. A particularly difficult question or times of phones-ringing-off-the-hook can get you an actually staffer.

I talked to a guy on Alexander’s staff last week who said that they average 10,000 calls, emails, faxes, and letters per month. All of that is rolled up into a report and given to the Senator. And the numbers really matter.

Even with the time zone issue I called at 4 Washington time and got nice recording at each Senate office so I will be calling tomorrow.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
