American Staffordshire Terrier vs. American Pit Bull Terrier

Xrlq addresses the pit bull name change I talked about here. He also gives some history of the AKC and pit bulls vs. Am Staffs.

It should be noted that to us purists (who don’t care about the AKC or registries) that Am Staffs and Pit Bulls are actually different breeds. Am Staffs tend to be larger than Pit Bulls. Of course, we purists will argue with other purists until we’re blue in the face and no one will be convinced.

I think this spring, Politically Incorrect Dog may go on his first hog catch.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find any historical evidence of a separate existence of APBTs and ASTs prior to the AKC registry of the AST, which was open to all then-registered APBTs. You will find a separate history for the other bull breeds, whose names can be confusingly similar. This was made worse by the fact that the AKC did not originally call the AST an “American Staffordshire Terrier” but rather, simply, “Staffordshire Terrier.” IIRC, the “Am” in AmStaff came much later, to resolve a name conflict with a similarly (identically?) named British breed.

The problem with most bully breeds is the lack of historical documentation of any kind. People like to think (including me) that American Bulldogs are the original english bulldog but we can’t really prove that. However, your point is well-taken.

say uncle I think you need to do a little more research on you american bulldog. The standard american bulldog was around long before the Johnson american bulldog. The johnson american bulldog is admittedly a mix of olde english bulldogge and american bulldog. John D Johnson will admit to that. I don’t know where you got your info. But, I would look again. John D Johnson’s favorite dog Godzilla came off of Alan Scott’s mac the masher. Standards have been around since bullbaiting days.

I got most of my info from a book i read a while back and some web searching. Old English Bulldogge’s have (to my knowledge) only been around since the 70s – link. Whereas johnsons came around much earlier and were bred with pitbulls and mastiffs as well. Of course, if you talk ten different bulldoggers you’ll likely get 10 different answers regarding the origins of their breed.

I’d like to read more info on the Scott dog origins. Do you have any links to info?

    Thanks!

One more thing: the scott and johnson types were bred at about the same time link (after ww2), or so it would seem. so any info you have on the subject i’d appreciate.

    American Staffordshires are larger.

Okay, the question has not been answered…Is the amt and pitbull the same kind of dog? Or is one a mix of the other.

Depends who you ask, ron. I say they’re different but others disagree.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
