Para Poll

So, I made fun of some girls for picking a girl caliber to train with. Anyway, some good points have been made about both weapons. To wit:

The TAC-S in 45: Well, it’s 45. Slim and snag free design. And some folks love the LDA trigger. And some folks can’t stand the trigger. And I actually carry a 45.

The LTC in 9mm: It’s a 9mm but if we’re gonna fire 1,500 rounds, that may be easier to deal with. Also, I prefer a single action trigger. Just preference. So, which would you choose:

Stop and think about what it says on my feelings toward the LDA trigger when I’m happier with an aluminum 4.25″ 9mm than a steel 5″ .45ACP…

  2. JR Says:

I have opted for the .45 as that is the caliber that I carry. If you are worried about the round count, a shooting glove may be in order.

I’m thinking that if I can achieve good splits with an LDA trigger, just think how fast I will be when I get back to my single action.

  3. Ahab Says:

    9mm, but then again imagirl.

  4. Phenicks Says:

Why not the PXT P18? More rounds and full size SA 1911 style.

  5. Cactus Jack Says:

Para TAC-S in 45ACP. Because when it comes to auto pistols there’s no other round, period! šŸ™‚

  6. DirtCrashr Says:

If you get teh Nine be sure to shoot sideways! šŸ™‚

I don’t like the LDA (Either a DAO trigger OR a manual Safety…not both is how I like them) and I carry a more traditional 1911 (S&W1911Sc) I’d say what I learn with the 9mm would be more valuble then the .45.

  8. Don Gwinn Says:

I don’t know what a Tac-S is, but I picked a .45. Both choices came with the LDA trigger, right? Well, I “carry” a .45 and that’s what I use. I don’t own a 9mm, and somebody else is buying the ammo, so for me, it was pretty clear.

I have no idea what my split times are. You people are going to humiliate me, and I’m OK with that. I’ve never fired a stage of action pistol anything in my life.

I “carry” a P220 in a fashion that is legal in Illinois–that is to say, unloaded and enclosed in a pack. I haven’t fired a round double-action in years, since I always shoot from that starting point. It means part of my “draw” is always loading and charging the weapon, which means I have to rack the slide anyway. Why add another step by decocking? I just shoot it like a single-action with no safety. It’ll be interesting to see what the LDA feels like.

Excellent question. The answer is that the nice folks who are buying all my ammo and loaning me their gun that weekend gave me a choice between two pistols. I’m not really interested in the equipment or the position; right now, I’m just glad to be on the team.

I’d choose the nine, if I were going.

  11. USCitizen Says:

I recorded my vote for the .45ACP – because, aren’t millimeters European or something?

  12. Letalis Maximus, Esq. Says:

Neither. Because Para Ord sucks, in my opinion.

  13. 454 cassull Says:

I will cast my vote for Para Ord sucks as well.

  14. HardCorps Says:

Why don’t you be a man and take a .45?

  15. Ravenwood Says:

Heh.. had a conversation today about 9mm. A guy said he just bought a 9mm Glock. I asked him why he didn’t get a mans gun and he said he was too inaccurate with a .40 or higher.

“I can shoot three 9mm rounds and hit an area the size of a quarter,” he said.

“You’re gonna need ’em,” I replied.

  16. mariner Says:

You forgot to add “Cowboy Neal” as one of the choices.

I vote for none of the above. I have no doubt that Paras are nice firearms, but I choose Glock.

    In .40.

  17. Dr. Strangegun Says:

The only difference between 9mm, .40, and .45 is as the smaller the round gets, the pickier you have to be about your carry ammo. Get the penetration and expansion and there’s no difference.

  18. saj Says:

neither. i vote for single action 1911.

  19. Joe Huffman Says:

I have lots of clever quotes on the topic of caliber selection for a carry gun. All have some truth to them even if they don’t arrive at the same conclusion. Here is a sample:

9mm may expand, but .45 NEVER shrinks.

    A hit from a .22 beats a miss by a .45.

You can’t miss fast enought to win.

Q: Do you know how to double the effectiveness of any bullet?
A: Put another round through your target.

The best self-defense gun is the one you have with you when you need it.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
