More on the ACLU and Heller

Joe notes their clarification. This could cost them some of their more libertarian leaning members.

Update: Well, cost them two folks already. See here and here.

I’m not a member and this is precisely why. I can’t believe they’re holding true to their bigoted stance even after the court ruled it an individual right.

  2. Rustmeister Says:

I’ve always considered the ACLU as a necessary evil with regards to protecting free speech, etc.

But how they can justify this position is beyond me.

  3. Nomen Nescio Says:

i need to dig around on their blog and see if any other post is getting, or ever has got, anywhere near as many comments as that one.

i managed to get comments #2 and #100, and not a single one were supportive of their position. tgirsch’s one was, i think, the least critical one, and he was neutral.

  4. Dan Says:

When was the last time they had done any real good civil liberties work?

As I keep telling my European friends and relatives, America is a unique thing outside previous experience. Europeans do have a right to keep and bear arms. They have an armed military and armed police. A collective right.

Americans have the same collective right. But in addition to that, American citizens also have an individual right.

  6. Chas Says:

It’s the American Communist Liberties Union. They support such liberties as are consistent with advancing the Marxist agenda, and they oppose any liberties, such as a private right to bear arms, that are inconsistent with advancing the Marxist agenda.
Their claim of dedication to the principle of liberty is a ruse. They support only such liberties as are politically useful to their Communist agenda. They need the First Amendment, for the time being, to gain power, but they have no use for the Second, since all their keeping and bearing arms is to be done exclusively by the government.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
