I still don’t get the comparison to seat belts and fire extinguishers. Makes no sense to me unless you completely ignore the “cost” portion of the cost/benefit analysis.
And, of course, I can’t remember the last time I saw someone walking around with a fire extinguisher everywhere they went…

The ‘cost’ for either is negligible.

Really? Negligible cost? So you don’t need to refresh ammunition on a gun every six months or less? You don’t need to spend any time at the range to maintain your skill? There’s no greater risk of wrongly harming someone (or yourself) with a gun than there is with a fire extinguisher?
Also, do you take the fire extinguisher with you when you leave the truck?
Come on, let’s be honest here…

Negligible.
And you’ve never taken fire safety or drivers ed? Granted, I don’t know many folks who consider fire extinguishing a hobby.
This risk may be greater but an insignificant number compared to an insignificant number is still insignificant.
Most places I go already have a fire extinguisher. I’m uncertain if they have a weapon.

The point is that carrying a gun everywhere you go isn’t like keeping a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. It’s more like carrying a rope and grappling hook wherever you go, in case you fall into a deep hole…

That’s funny, I always use the seat belt example when folks ask why I carry. I wear a seat belt to mitigate the impact of a low probability/high consequence event (car wreck). I carry to mitigate the impact of a low probability/ high consequence event (criminal assault). If I knew I was going to have an accident on a particular journey, I’d stay out of the car; similarly, I avoid situations where I think I might need a gun. I carry all the time, though, for those times when avoidance isn’t enough.

People seldom catch fire when walking about but are often robbed / assualted then.
People in kitchens, on the other hand, are much more likely to experience a fire.
Thus, people out and about should be prepared for the possibility of being assualted and people in kitchens should be ready to deal with a fire.
Neither group should be excessively paranoid about the respective problem – or, if they are, then as noted they should take a good look at their situation and see what they can change.
Here’s another question for you: do you always buy something when you go out? If not, why do you bother to haul your wallet around?

Mainly so I know where it is. 🙂 The only time my wallet ever leaves my pocket is when I take it out to pay for something or show ID, or when I transfer it from one pair of pants to another. And, of course, the odds of me harming anyone with my wallet are pretty much nil. 😉
Mind you, I have a carry permit, but I practically never actually carry, because despite the permit, I’m really not qualified to do so. (I’ve never presented a weapon from a holster in a moment of crisis, for example.)
Again, the original point is that there are three factors at play here: (1) What are the chances that you might need something? (2) How big of a pain is it to carry that something with you? And (3) Is there any downside to keeping it with you? All of these factor in. You think that the probability of #1 outweighs #s 2 and 3. That’s your prerogative. But I submit that most people not reading gun blogs are inclined to disagree with you. And yes, maybe even view your point of view as a little paranoid. You might not agree with them, but their point of view isn’t as unreasonable as you seem to think it is. That’s all I’m saying.

I beg to differ. When a group of people who don’t know us, who won’t take the time to get to know us, unceasingly refer to us directly and indirectly as a bunch of paranoid nutcases, well, I’d say that’s the textbook definition of “unreasonable.”

Sounds like an even better reason to carry a handgun – it’s even more important to know where it is than your wallet.
As has been said by many – and many times – if I thought I was going to need my pistol I wouldn’t go there – or if I did I’d bring a rifle. 😉
