Man skills

Insty links to 25 things a man should know how to do. Phelps is a man. And he also offers his far more, err, useful list:

Stop arterial bleeding

[…]

Read a children’s book aloud with funny voices

Useful skills to have. I think I’d add:

Clean a carcass

Purify water

Tie a knot (including one for a fishhook)

Know the lyrics to at least ten kids’ songs

Break up a dog fight

The only item on your list I have covered is knowing kids’ songs. In fact, I go one further and make up my own lyrics to further delight my children (helpful Jay G. hint: You can’t go wrong with the words “booger” or “poop”. You’re welcome.)

I suppose I could break up a dogfight, but not in a manner that would please either of the dogs…

  2. Phelps Says:

I actually started to add cleaning a carcass and breaking up a dogfight, but I wanted to keep with the “25” format and they got bumped off. And a sailor’s hitch will work for a fishhook.

And I think that displeasing the dogs is the first element of breaking up a dogfight successfully. (The first rule is — don’t join the dogfight.)

  3. Phelps Says:

I’m waiting for someone to challenge me on whether or not looking good in a suit is a skill or not.

  4. Captain Holly Says:

Don’t know about dogfights, but I do know that a garden hose works wonders forbreaking up a catfight.

  5. SayUncle Says:

    Holly, works on dogs too.

I think the suit thing is valid. So many folks don’t know how to wear one.

  6. Standard Mischief Says:

And a sailor’s hitch will work for a fishhook.

And a Sailor’s hitch is what again? I’m guessing bowline (YouTube), but correct me if I’m wrong.

  7. Phelps Says:

Very similar. You use whatever you are hitching it to like the line in a bowline. If you want to hang something, or pull something, or tow something, or most importantly, if you want to lash two lines together (like if you need to pull cables or use shorter lengths to make a longer one) then a sailor’s hitch will work.

  8. Linoge Says:

I would only comment to add the standard Heinleinian list:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

That said, I am still working on them, and Phelps’ list gave me even more homework…

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
