HK-91 by PTR

Since HK won’t sell you one, PTR industries steps up to make the stamped sheet metal gun.

I strongly considered the PTR 91 through CDNN, but ended up with the FAL instead. Maybe in a few months.

  2. Bram Says:

I have an original HK91 and love it. Someday when I have the cash, I will buy a PTR just to have another that is legal everywhere.

It looks like the biggest difference is the barrels – PTR isn’t using a Polygonal type. But the prices are great – better than a comparable AR for a better rifle.

    Very good news.

  4. junyo Says:

I’m seriously considering selling my RFB and buying one of these or an FAL.

  5. MAJ Mike Says:

Got my HK91 back in 1986. One of my firearms I will never sell.

  6. chris Says:

I am to have one of these or it’s H & K counterpart before the election in November.

I have a CETME, which I really like.

I’m not sure I can justify the price, but I’m not their target market.

(Though contra Bram, I don’t know what “comparable” means between an AR and a G3, given the caliber difference.

I do know that I have a lot of doubt as to the value-add proposition between a $650 AR and a $1200 one, generally.)

  8. Bram Says:

I was talking about the AR10.

  9. Darrell Says:

I picked up a base version on sale from Sarco years ago, all of $600. Couldn’t beat it with a stick for the money. I did a few upgrades, keeping it 922r compliant–trigger, sear and hammer, plus trigger job by Bill Springfield, wide HK front guard and bipod, flash hider, claw mount and scope. It kicks like a mule.

  10. Duane Says:

Would still love to find a modern version of something advertised in the old 1980’s gun mags. I think it was marketed by ‘Fleming?’ It was basically a full auto G3 but built out as an MP5K for executive protection.

I have a Cetme I got for 500 bucks about the same time a friend of mine bought his PTR-91 for 900 bucks. My Cetme out shoots his PTR by a wide margin. Two thing I have trouble with my Cetme are the claw mount for the scope wont stay put and it launches cases 30-40 feet. They hate me at the range…lol. I have a wish list of parts staged on Amazon that are just waiting for some free cash. once completed I will send some pics 🙂

I like mine: from sandbags I was getting 3″ at 200yds (1.5 MOA) with old Australian surplus using a Hensoldt 4x scope (with temps in the 30s, so I was probably getting a cold-bore shot every string…). The recoil is heavier than an AR-15, but you get used to it. Especially if you put the wide handguard and Magpul PRS stock on there, which makes it really heavy!

Downsides to the HK91-style rifle are two: it beats the hell out of brass, and it doesn’t have a last round hold open. The former is only an issue if you reload (which is why I only feed mine surplus). The latter is a serious demerit, IMO, as I’m not going to stick tracers in for my last couple rounds. Still, as Boston T. Party opines in his “Gun Bible”, it’ll pretty much always work, which is what you want in an SHTF rifle.

CDNN has the best price on the gun. RTG has good prices on surplus accessories; buy new at HKParts if you’re rich 😉

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
