Waivers

Selective enforcement of the law is the first sign of tyranny:

President Barack Obama on Thursday will free 10 states from the strict and sweeping requirements of the No Child Left Behind law, giving leeway to states that promise to improve how they prepare and evaluate students, The Associated Press has learned.

Tennessee is one of them.

No Child Left Behind was a poorly thought out program in the first place. I live in CO, one of the states receiving a waiver. I have a friend who is a teacher at a charter school. The school population is low enough per grade that the statistics required for acceptable marks just aren’t feasible, specifically the requirement of a percentage of a grade improving year over year. When there are only 100 students in a grade and 2 are sub-par it’s pretty hard to have a 5% improvement without cutting kids into little bits. Which apparently, they frown on.

Then get rid of it lawfully instead of excepting people based on political pull or the fact they can’t comply.

And if you look at California and what huge sums are spent on students and education, it becomes quite clear that it’s not about money.

When I started my College Degree search to become a Teacher many moons ago, one of my classes covered “Leave Every Child Behind.” They had set up the Law that, when it when into effect, a kid in First Grade could Graduate before they would start shutting down schools and firing Teachers. 12 years to get their act together. Now that the time for the Bad Apples to be thrown out of the Barrel is upon us, ‘Oops! You really want us to enforce the Law that we wrote? Silly Voter. Fire Union Teachers-for-Life in an Election Year? Make the State Legislature actually spend Money on Schools instead of School Administrators? Silly Voter.”

So how many Billions have been spent by the Federales so that we’ve reached the point that nothing has changed?

It’s a good time to remind people that while the left typically blames Bush for the failings of ‘No Child Left Behind’, The bill was actually one of Teddy Kennedy’s babies… and was mostly a peace offering to the left after the Florida election cluster—-.

  6. Kristopher Says:

Let’s give ALL states a waiver. And then shut down the Department of Education, and stop funding grade schools with federal taxes.

  7. wizardpc Says:

With a NCLB waiver, I wonder what Nashville schools will blame poor performance on now?

All I ever hear from teachers is how NCLB is both awful and the only reason the school system is such a joke.

  8. Mr Evilwrench Says:

Ut oh, now they’ll have to scramble to find something new to blame!

  9. NAME REDACTED Says:

This way he guarantees support from those groups. After-all, if they stop supporting him, he can remove their waver.
